QUOTE.."I hope nobody thinks I go on a bit... but a lot of feaces have hit the rotational air distributor lately. Dave[rapid] will confirm that, I spent a long weekend at his recently (which don't forget is about 700miles by jet propulsed airborne travel) because I couldn't cope with the pressures and strain on me just at that time. Theyve [very very slightly] alleviated since." You came to my house with my mad, loud wife and her equally loud, mad cousin, and my five loud, mad kids and quiet little me for stress relief? ROTFPMSL! :)Seriously though, hope all is well, you're welcome any time. Standard can be cool IMO.

Some interesting points here! This year I will be getting the first (and only?) car which I intend to leave standard. My work is moving to somewhere where I won't be able to park safely and though I love driving my odd Daihatsu tat around, I can't bear the thought of leaving them even in public car parks for people to smash their doors off the them etc. Let alone leave them on the street. So instantly I thought "I'll get something old and Japanese to do the commuting" but then I thought of the Charmant, even though it's rough around the edges in places it's a project and I still treat it with a lot of care. I just know for a fact if I bought an old Accord or something, I'd get it home, put a few coats of wax on it, marvel at the speedometer design and cheesy old radio then instantly become overprotective of it and be afraid to actually use it. So then I thought of boring cars, early Mondeos, etc. and had a look around and it just isn't for me. Even though it is a daily hack I'm not meant to care much about, it needs to have a bit of character to it. Something where I feel like a bit of an underdog when driving it. Driving the Mira on a morning cheers me up somewhat and I'd hate to lose that feeling. So I had a think and came up with rough criteria: - Obscure enough that I won't see 50 of them driving to work, but common enough that it won't attract any attention or make me feel like I'm killing off a dying breed - New enough that I shouldn't have too many problems with parts, but old enough that I'll be able to work on it somewhat - Likely to be pre-battered with bad paint already so I couldn't care less if it gets dented or scratched - Finally, it has to be utterly inappropriate for me to be driving, to the point that it brings a smile to my face After careful consideration, I present my future daily hack (not this actual one): Should be just the ticket - can't wait to start looking at a few! The more battle scars the better.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say the beige one is the most noticed daily on the board? ;D ;D

Hi there, must admit, I haven't read all seven pages yet because I'm a day or two late on this topic I think, but he's what I've got to say for meself!!
I'm an 18 year, born and bred in the beautiful county of Essex. Guess what my first car was..................... yup that's right a bloody peugeot 106!! I hated it, I hated the fact that it was a 106. I hated the fact that I could drive into town and see at least 2 of exactly the same car, same colour, same spec level, same uninspired look on the drivers face. But, at least it meant I was driving.
Like I say, I hated it. But I had no real reason to. It was reliable, it was plenty fast enough for comfortable driving, despite being a 1.1. It was big enough, I was always putting my bike in the back. And even the fuel economy was good. It was a great car that served me well, taking me from Essex, to the Peak District, down to Devon, and back to Essex in a week and a half, complete with two bikes, lots of bike spares, two people and luggage. I still hated it though!
Like SS, I've always wanted a car that sticks out, gets noticed and has people turning round and walking backwards! And I always knew that at the first available opportunity I would buy a classic- this happened to be as soon as my student loan got paid in, in September! It's great, people ask about it, look at it, laugh at it, etc, it always gets noticed and I'm proud to own it! It genuinely doesn't matter to me that it has no radio, or heater, or there's a draught and so many rattles I sound like a primary school percussion lesson......! I've driven to Leeds and back a couple of times at about 60mph all the way and got through it by just enjoying owning and driving it!
To me, it doesn't matter whether a car is standard or not, as long as it is old/classic/retro, it isn't boring! I have no desire for a modern car and have already run through many a situation that may occur in life and decided that there is a classic/retro car to suit!
For example..... I get married, have three kids and get a dog named Benson..... I either get a E30 touring BMW 3 series with M3 lump and running gear, or a Vauxhall Victor estate beaten with the stick, rat look and powered by a silly large V8, OR a squareback VW type 3.......!
I guess it just depends on the person. I like to be different, I wouldn't say I'm an attention seeker, but tbh I have been brought up (in Essex) not particularly keen on what I see around me. Funnily enough, I'm yet to see anyone else driving round my home town in a bog standard 1972 Hillman Imp........!!

I don;t buy cars to "stand out" but I seem to do so wihtout trying. As for the girlies, I was parked up in town waiting for my wife in my Mk3 Cortina a while back and 4 young fitties in miscroscopic skirts (all just about half my age I guess!) all crowd round the car, saying "wow, love your car" and stuff and asked if they could take pics and before you know it I've got lythe and slinky 16/17 year old legs draped over the bonnet and camera going and its like a 1973 Motorshow shoot or something.
Wife says "making friends dear?"
oops.
Wish I'd had *my* camera with me LOL.
And that was a £450 car with T&T.
And it was dead relaiable, excellent daily driver.
"cars aren't boring" - some of them are. Try driving a 1992 Mazda 626 every day. Don't get me wrong, I like the car, but its dull.
Lifes too short for boring cars.
Reanimation - your guy with the retro ford he never gets on with - he has obviously put other priorities in his life first. I found heavy drinking curtailed my car activities significantly when I was in my "booze hound" phase....
The vast majority of my driving is commuting. My commuter needs to be interesting.

My commuter needs to be interesting. Spot on. Also I would also argue that you CAN do commuting and 20k+ miles a year in a lot of retro cars, which I would still class as bangernomics anyway. (You can do it in 'Classics', but I would regard most classics as being designed before widspread motorways, and heavy useage does have to be taken into account when looking at maintenance) It's just bangernomics looking beyond the obvious - I would like think my recentish personal choices of Metro, BX TXD, Volvo 760 turbo, VW Scirocco and Audi 90 Quattro were all (borderline?) retro and all interesting for different reasons. All were reliable, cost under £500, and sold at either small loss or profit. We had a recent lucky escape from a Mk3 Astra 1400, and instead have a Audi 80 16v for the wife, which actually cost less 'cos people put more value on the obvious choices. Not having time for car stuff due to other priorities, eg family, I only really fully understood after we had our twins! I wonder what I did with all my time before they came along

When i was after a proper car, when i had a bit of cash and was pig sick of my boggo povo spec 306 1.4 and was 21 i bought a mk1 golf gti. Initially i thought i would get mad props from everyone, and people would take notice, but not many people seem to. Its only those in the know, and to me thats better than everyone noticing it!
For example the cars that everyone notices are radically different/expensive/huge/chavved. My polo which i got for £80 for a uni hack gets loadsa attention, and to be honest its funny at times, but it annoys me alot. Because its pretty different to the norm people expect it to go like the clappers, or see fit to be alongside me for ages (annoying when your in the wrong lane), or tailgate me etc etc. I'm also embarrased about it at times, for instance my girlfriends mum and grandparents arent gonna understand its just a bit of fun (althou ive mentioned it!).
Also cos the polo has been mucked about with people don't think i care about it, ive had racist comments written on the bonnet when it had condensation (cos its got matt paint it shows up afterwards) so i had to spray it again, or i get people scratching "shed" on it, and last weekend had some donk wreck my bonnet and kicked in a front wing. it was already dented, but if i catch these fukkas imma dent their faces. just cos i have my fun outta it people think they can too. Also i got foot prints all over the roof, its not really on, and i wish i left it as was.
I actually worry about whats been done to it when i go to the polo on the mornings, which is the complete opposite reason to getting it!
I really cant wait til i get my golf mk1 back during easter (as the polo is dying), and get good vibes of people in the know, but to the uneducated folk its just an old golf, and to just not worry about it, aswell as those days that all i want is to find some twisties and gun it!

Its only those in the know, and to me thats better than everyone noticing it! That's what counts dude, especially if you like it! Always makes me smile when someone notices my "standard" Sierra Sapphire "1.6L" has rear discs and lowered suspension. Surprisingly several people have spotted them and had a chat about the car! Joe Public ain't worth impressing.

ive had racist comments written on Iz it 'coz you iz black? ;D I actually worry about whats been done to it when I go to the polo on the mornings, which is the complete opposite reason to getting it! I used to be like that about my Bug... I had a webcam set up to monitor it over night and all sorts... Now for the last 3 years I've been driving completely and utterly random/curse word cars, and while of course I care about them, I'm not gonna cry if someone opens the door on it in the car park or owt... I used to get some right funny looks sliding my satin black T25 panel van into IBM HQ carpark when i worked there...and everyone used to ask me why I don't drive normal cars. Well...we all know why that is, hence being here! Generally speaking, my cars owe me well under a grand. Usually bought for a couple ton, and have a few more spent on making it 'mine' curse word what other people think man, make yourself happy. Do you think people think I'm cool rolling around in a gold mk2 passat estate with a brown/beige interior? Do I give a curse word? I feel like a king driving that thing....it's got power steering and everything! I bought some 15 by 9 Matig steelies for my passat the other day. The first 2 people that I told/saw them thought they were curse word/horrible...but I like them, so they're staying!
