I hope nobody thinks I go on a bit... but a lot of feaces have hit the rotational air distributor lately. Dave[rapid] will confirm that, I spent a long weekend at his recently (which don't forget is about 700miles by jet propulsed airborne travel) because i couldn't cope with the pressures and strain on me just at that time. Theyve [very very slightly] alleviated since.
Anyhow I was sitting today, in the house, in front of a red hot coal smouldering furnace, playing Juiced [best game evAr btw] on the brothers PS2; and then i realised something, and I don't know if anyone shares this. Do you ever get tired of having a standard car? Does even the blandness of a mildly interesting, outside the usual vehicular object not entertain your fancy enough? For me, although i love my current favorit, its not enough. I really, really want a stand out car that will REALLY get noticed. A proper showoff car that cannot be passed by anyone. I know some of my cars hold a fair degree of interest to some, and I've had comments from car people. But I want a car I can pull up ANYWHERE and have somebody say 'that is awesome dude' or 'what the hell?!' If I had the money, i would have put my money where my mouth is today and finally got that Peugeot 406 I've always promised myself, preferably a white V6 with white racing compomotives (think Taxi). Just something totally whacked out that will not pass anyone by unnoticed.
Perhaps, this might stem from how i'm feeling, if i'm feeling insignificant and unnoticed. I suppose that could be true as all the important people in my life are disappearing one by one. A car would make up for them, non?

Do you ever get tired of having a standard car? Yes. Usually shortly after purchase. Its a disease but don't go to your GP for a cure. Buy Custom Car instead.

Yes. Usually shortly after purchase. Agreed, this is totally normal, when i last bought a car, that "feelgood" sensation of having a new motor lasted a week. hooo - bloomin - ray. Mostly due to the fact that its a 90's peugeot diesel i'll admit, but i've had the same feeling time and time again. This place doesnt help tho (in a good way) no sooner do i get a car i like then i get a new "idea" for a better one. ;D

Get very bored very quick. Not having the capri scraping along the ground is actually making me think about slapping the sh** out of it with tha stick of truth, like every minute of every day.
The same with modern cars. It has to be a bit different from the masses. On the other hand I wouldn't do wibblepoo to it just to make it stand out.

as seth said, if you want a car thats gonna turn everyones head you need to be reading custom car! Some bargains have been in there over recent months.
i just wish the new cars i buy would come with MoT so they don't end up as ornaments for so long! ;D
a cheaper way to get that feelgood factor is to buy a bike. turns head, and there really is nothing like being on 2 wheels

TBH, i'm getting a bit fed up with people asking me questions about my car whenever i stop anywhere. Maybe because it's always one of the same 4 questions.

Standard car - not a problem for me - so long as its about 30 - 50 years old.
Mind you even a stock Chrysler 5th Ave turns some heads (and a few stomachs)
But I'm not in the business of turning heads, I'm in the business of liking what I own. Thats applying to clothes, furniture, my garden, whatever as much as the cars.
The secret to being happy about stuff is doing your thing and doing it your way and it working out. If you try do someone elses thing, or to live to please/shock other people or set yourself expectations you will never be able to meet, well that way lies ruin.
I just couldn't own a car I didn't find interesting and cool. I've tired it. A few times. It never works out for long. Most of my moderns would be retro now though LOL.
Theres a few modern cars I would try owning. I'd love a Cadillac CTS-V or even an SRX. I had an SRX on rental for 2 weeks and loved every minute of it. Whether I'd still ove it after 2 months or even 2 years? I can't say, but I think so. I'd also give a Chrysler 300C Hemi a go. I've driven the new CHarger but only in the V6 and that wasn't quite right. I'd not want to have one of them long term. Theres a new RWD Impala in the works too. Gotta be worth a look when it comes out, or in my case, when its about 10 years old!

I like standard cars but a Favorit isn't really distinctive enough. Two of our standard cars are design classics, several are cars people love to hate! That's enough for me.
That said, all this recent talk of 2CV-rodding has got me thinking...

I've been driving a Mk3 Astra 1.4 LS as my daily for a year now and I'm dead on the inside.
I don't think standard cars are bad, just that boring cars are boring.

Nope, not really.
in many ways, bland 'cannon-fodder' dullness is great.
Don't get me wrong, I loves my old motors, be that razzing round fast quiet roads in the BMW or trundling through town in some 60's tin, or ploughing through mud in a crusty old land rover.
But there's times when the 'CBA' (Can't be ars'd) factor weighs heavily.
Get in our dullsmobile focus, start engine and point in the direction of where you want to go. You will get there comfortably and with the minimum of fuss and all at 48mpg with radio 2 clearly audible at all times. I like that. And it makes the times when you do get to play with your toys all the more enjoyable.

There is certainly a large amount of satisfaction in having a car you don't care about washing, rattle over kerbs in traffic and can park anywhere. Not to mention running red lights and cutting up SUV's and feeling completely untraceable.

Cash purchase, just got the old V5 in the previous owners name handed over intact, had a tax disc the right colour in the window, back in the days before ANPR and all that, trade insurance didn;t ask for registrations to be notified back then, great parts hauler, great "in a hurry" car, now worries. Totally anonymous. I obviously do not condone running unregistered cars round with no tax on them...

Hmm yeah, the Sapph is not exactly fast but it is competent, RWD, dry, cleanish, and modernish. very invisible. of course driving a ratty 2 seater retro-futuristic coop gets a few looks! I'm not bothered what people think really its all for me but, be nice to finish and drive propper car all the time after all it is the fruits of your labour, expense, knowlege. Show car one day... I say get that 406 realised NOW be super cool, either Taxi style or similar theres plenty about so find a good one at a fair price now to mod;)

If you try do someone elses thing, or to live to please/shock other people or set yourself expectations you will never be able to meet, well that way lies ruin. I agree 110%. And if you're unhappy, owning certain stuff won't necessarily make you magically happy. I learned that at the age of 26, when I spent a lot of time taking antidepressants and watching daytime TV. It's all good now though! I just couldn't own a car I didn't find interesting and cool. I've tired it. A few times. It never works out for long. Most of my moderns would be retro now though LOL. Must say I'm loving the bland anonymity my Mondeo provides. FSH, low miles, air con, ultra cheap, rear bumper pre-broken so it doesn't matter if it gets bumped. Plus the radio buttons are big enough to prod with a pastie or mobile phone while doing 80mph. ;D
