There's a new family moved in down the road and they've brought with them a stunningly perfect P6 V8. I find myself ogling it ever time I pass it. I know it's brilliant - so British yet with those subtle bulges that show it's a V8 but for some reason I don't think I couldn't own one. They just look slightly too 'fuddy-duddy' for me (and that's coming from someone who raves about Saabs!) I get the feeling that a set of wide spoke, dished american muscle alloys might help if the ride height was adjusted to suit but something subtle would have to be done to the body to lessen the zimmerframe feel ... for my liking. Google brings up a few race cars that look amazing but the roadcars don't seem to be able to pull off the 'cool' look. Here's a racer that looks like it'll cut your legs off then eat you:

I've always thought they were one of the coolest looking British cars ever made and certainly if you discount the SD1 the coolest Rover (which to be fair isn't saying much) but yeah, very cool.

The Race look suits the P6 I crashed an 'S' through my next door neighbours fence, when I was 18 ;D

I reckon that the P6 looks pretty stylish for its era. As a result of the strange suspension layout, and clearance issues at the back, they're not very easy to modify, though it has been done. Both of mine are fairly standard.

I've always thought they were "cool" even in 100% standard condition. My late father-in-law had a M reg V8 auto in dark brown when we got married in 1980. Took us all to registry office in it (self, wife, sister in law as well as mother / father in law as we were all living together). Things I remember were the reserve fuel option, the fact the badge on the bootlid unscrewed so the spare could be mounted there, PIA to change spark plugs (I've still got the socket I had to grind down to fit), oil filter also difficult to unscrew and changing rear pads are things that can still cause nightmares :-) It failed MOT on a front suspension ball joint and one of the few times were couldn't do the job ourselves (father-in-law was a WWII RAF mechanic and then foreman of Jaguar main dealer workshop until he moved into sportsground construction). Luckilly someone in local pub bragged he could remove the old joint if we gave him the part - then cursed when he returned it with the new one pressed in. Nice car and fond memories. Got parked up when a Volvo 240 bought and eventually sold for £150 as an engine donor for a hot rod despite only being around 7-8 years old as started to rot away under rear seat / suspension area.

I grew up in a white 2200TC, then a brown 2600 SD1. My recollection is that the P6 felt much more solid. The SD1 had a lighter flimsier feel to it. I'd love a manual P6B as a family holiday car especially one looking like those racers

Must admit I'm wanting one more now ... this thread could get expensive There's a coupe that should have been made - that's brilliantly executed!

Not a great pic, but the black one in the Uma Thurman/Jude Law film 'Gattaca' looks lovely:
