I like how much Pratchett gets inserted in to random threads on this forum..  I have a Death quote on my shoulder.  It is nice to come agross people who appreciate his sense of humour What quote have you got?

My shoulder crunches. SQUEAK in Baskerville Old Face or similar would pretty great for a squeaky shoulder tattoo My tattoo says 'Take the universe and grind it down to the finest powder and sieve it through the finest sieve and then show me one atom of justice, one molecule of mercy' In a spiral that takes up probably 2/3 of my shoulder blade. Always thought it was an interesting insight in to humans, as on the one hand, the things we hold important and define us as human were conceived with only our minds, and on the other hand, the things we think are important are imaginary. |

Just read all 90 pages in - I don’t know, I think the moon’s risen six-ish times - and what a read it was! Great to see you trying things out of your comfort zone; also great to see the trial and error as you’ve worked through things. You really have inspired me to have a crack at some things on the Pontiac that I probably wouldn’t have entertained before.

Good on you from reading from the start. I do occasionally see people liking posts from way back. It's nice to see people still reading the early stuff but I do wonder what drives them to do it. But then I've just finished a hundred and odd pages on HMVF detailing a small group restoring a WW1 truck. Actually two of them. So it would seem I'm not immune to getting sucked into a story either! Anyway, welcome along, and sorry for taking ages to reply. Not much is happening on the MR2 front. Other stuff is taking precedence. I have done a few bits on the replacement wing that I’ve failed to write up. One day… Anyway, the MOT is due. I believe it’ll automatically extend but if it doesn’t I plan to put the car in before I cut the wing off. Except my tame garage is shut due self isolating. One thing that did come up last MOT was a warning that the rear number plate was degrading. We’ll it had got worse over the last 12 months so I thought I’d replace it.   I’d like to (eventually) either fix or reproduce the original plate but as a quick fix from a standard internet supplier this isn’t terrible. If you didn’t know what the original looked like you wouldn’t be upset by it. And it’s tidied up the back end of the car.   If anything it’s too good. Anybody got any tips on ‘ageing’ a number plate!? James |

Green scouring pad over it will dull the plastic down. If you need it even duller, use a metal pan scouring pad.

Looks like it's practicing social distancing from the Vauxhall and wearing a mask. Belt and braces approach. I approve.
Anyway, there is a massive difference between "patina" which is a beautiful thing, and "rust holes" which apparently aren't. I'm not sure where the cross over actually is but I'm fairly sure the MR2 is on the wrong side of the line.

I tried quite a few on line things and went with the one that had the closest looking match. Even then it's not that close.
When I looked at this a year ago I'm sure I found one where I could swap colours for the red 'for TOYOTA' bit. Couldn't find it again.

Reckon that's a decent match considering you're trying to keep it legal. You won't be able to reproduce your old plate exactly and have them legal anyway, as they use the pre 2001 wider font.
Of course I may have got replacement plates on my pre 2001 car that use the earlier font. Or I may not. Good luck to them proving that such a plate was definitely manufactured after 2001, as there was no requirement for all cars before that to go out and buy new plates.

PFC you can choose the colour of the address line but its all or nothing, all blue, all red. plus they can only do text not logos (in my case square griffins or in your case nifty script toyota) they can do it without BS markings which is illegal now, but correct for period of the car. i don't think there is a perfect solution! |

I promise I'm not some far right anti-government loon (I hope) but reading as to which number plate formats, fonts, etc are legal in Britain, including the exclusion of old plates which were one perfectly OK, would seem to drive home the point that the glorious island nation has strangled itself with the most obtuse, petty and asinine rule-driven structure possible. But maybe I should ask if all this arcanery was in fact a British creation or was it foisted upon you from Brussels? John

Ok. If I don't make an effort and post something I'll just drift away. Time to get my act together and grow up. And as I've already written this for the MR2 forum it shouldn't be too hard surely? The inner wheel arch was crushed when the car was parked in a lamp post - or whatever the previous owner did to it.   The replacement wing had this piece attached. It wasn’t perfect but it’d be easier to repair it than to fix what was on the car.   First problem was that when they’d cut the wing off the red car they’d cut a slot in it with a 3mm disk. So I needed to quickly zip that up.   Well good luck with that! It turns out that the inner arch on MR2s is about the same thickness as a coke can and was a total git to buzz back together.   Eventually I wound up with something that looked horrific, even with a piece of copper pipe backing it up. So I actually put a decent bead on the other side using the pigeon poo as a backing and then ground it down.   This is going to be a taste of the problems to come… You can also see a bent bit on this arch. So it would seem that somebody hit the red car in exactly the same place as mine which is why they replaced the wing which I now have to go on my black car. Got that? Well anyway, I tapped that flat with a hammer and dolly. James |

Cripes Margo. He’s ruined that.   I hope that I actually have the skill to put it back together. Rather than just assuming I have the skill because I don’t know any better. Anyway, we are getting ahead of ourselves. First the interior came out ‘cos I didn’t want to set fire to it accidentally. (If I have run out of talent I might set fire to it deliberately.)   Next the rear light block and the bumper.   That’s a nice photo showing why we are doing this. The rear bumper is held on with four fastenings. Two nuts in the boot and two bolts underneath. So I’d undone three of the fastenings and was just scooting across to get the last bolt under the car when the bumper unexpectedly hit me in the face. I remember when I last put the bumper back on I had a feeling that one of the bolts had stripped. Evidently I was right and the 4th fastening is somewhere on the roads of Kent. First job, because being hit in the face is considered suboptimal at Sweetpea Towers, was to take the captive nut off and replace it with a new one.   I might do the other side one day. Especially as the new bolt has a different thread. Lastly the side skirts need to come off revealing something else I need to fix.   I cleaned this out a couple of years ago and it was full of leaves again. They come off the edge of the windscreen and get trapped in the bottom of the wings rotting them out. One day I’ll look and see if there is a way to stop things falling down there in the first place. James |
