My dim and distant memory is that P38 is a resin with chopped fibre in it and it’s main use was to be plastered over rust holes to seal things up before being covered in lots of undersell so the MOT man couldn’t spot it. Quite why I remember this use is beyond me (different times my boy, different times). P40 was the stuff that could be filed smooth on the body after the aluminium mesh was used to bridge the hole. If you wanted to pass the magnet test apparently you could add some iron filings. Regards James  You've got the usage spot on but it's the other way round - P38 is body filler and P40 is fibreglass in resin.... |

Oh! Oh! I am about to bin a bootlid with plummey spoiler and an engine lid. cover postage and its yours my man, I totally forgot about that....

And if you get the spoiler sent to me first along with the paint code off your car I will make sure it arrives back at yours in the correct colour to match the car - what more could you want for - unless you want the pain of gluing a MR2 spoiler back together and it only cracking open again when the sun comes out  |

Isn't this one of fancy spoilers that self regulates?
From my understanding, when it rains, it captures the rain and stores it in the spoiler, increasing the weight and therefore pressing the car down slightly at the back to provide increased traction on the wet road.
That's how a short guy from the Peckham School of Dodgy Car Tech explained it to me........

Ford Sierra Sapphires were fitted with a similar spoiler. Most spoilers use plain old down-force, these special ones capture the natural energy of downpour-force and are proven to be an effective performance enhancement. They also add lightness by allowing the boot to dissolve away from the fixing points, thus increasing both traction and your power to weight ratio.
Not sure why they didn't catch on more, really.

You folks completely astonish me. Just 24 hours after posting a sorry tail of my waterlogged spoiler and I've got 2 offers of replacements (Jimi did the same over on the MK1 forum) and an offer to get it the right colour. Plus info on materials and ideas on how to fix it. Oh and some people taking the pi55! But that just makes me laugh so that's ok too. So here's the odd thing about me... I'm not looking at this and thinking "oh what a disaster". I'm looking at an opportunity to play with something new. I'm actually excited about doing something different. Feckin' idiot eh? I'm excited about learning something new... And if my repair cracks and falls out, well I'll just have learned how not to do it. So thank you all very much for your offers and information... But I have to play first. ToolsnTrack , seems a shame to bin the bits but I'm not sure where I'd keep them either. (Yeah, I know, on the back of the car... See above for details of lunacy.) Hmmm though but... Just hmmm. @grumpynorthener , you may have a much bigger problem than painting my spoiler... You may have to teach me to paint over the internet! (Oh dear, I think he may be about to leave Retro Rides...) Anyway, given that ToolsnTrack and jimi have spoilers... What do you think a MK1 would look like with a double whale tail thing on the back? I had a waterlogged spoiler on a Monza - it stopped the tailgate struts working and turning the tailgaye into a gillotine - managed to find another that was same colour and it was a third of the weight when compared so I fitted that.
I never like to throw things away and it was in good nick bar a few little micro-blisters so put the water logged one in the airing cupboard hoping it would dry out - stuck a sticker on it with the weight in kgs
3 years later (when Mrs BC reminded me it wasn't a towel) it was still the same weight!!!!

Anyway, given that ToolsnTrack and jimi have spoilers... What do you think a MK1 would look like with a double whale tail thing on the back? Apart from 'stupid'. In my head it might be a thing... Mount it upside down underneath like a rocket bunny splitter! |

I once had a BMW spoiler similar to this. I'm not convinced it was genuine the way it had studs protruding from it the same way and bolted through the lip of the boot lid where the skins were crimped and sealed together.
Anyhow, one of my studs let go and made a mess. I don't think a pump nozzle falling on it helped either creating a split.
I didn't trust bonding in the stud, so i dug into the foam of the spoiler and found a re-enforcing bar of metal. I welded the stud onto this then filled around it with epoxy. I then used tiger seal to bond the spoiler back onto the boot lid.
Having removed body kit held on with tiger seal since, i'm pretty sure I could of jut bonded the stud back in and the majority of the fastening would have been done with the tiger seal.

Ah so... The stud that came out was just screwed into the plastic (I think - I've not looked closely). It hasn't stripped the threads it just unscrewed. The idea of bonding a stainless one back in was just to hold it in. The nut in my hand in the photo was just because I happened to have a nut in my hand when I took the photo. And this idea of using a rear spoiler as an over grown splitter... Hmmm. It'd look a bit like that Japanese style thing where a car has that massive protruding chin thing... What's it called? Bukkake or something?  Edit. Poss not safe for work, partners, or parents. Although maybe your ma and pa get up to such things... I couldn't comment. |

Oh thank God, I was confused when I googled MR2 bukkake spoiler and I was getting all sorts of awkward videos with male twins and ladies in compromising positions.
Oddly enough, not one comment talked about how the romance documentaries ended, though!
