okaaaay, so where do we stand here? well, This was bought purely on impulse, so it was either going to be a massive pile of doggy do do, or a half decent motor. So far it turns out to be my saving grace! The polo decided it not longer liked its engine yesterday. By the sounds of it, the entire internals disintegrated! £95 and a truck ride home later, my attention turned to the Cordoba. All i knew about the car was that it overheated, so i started with the thermostat as thats where water appeared to be leaking. Sure thing, the housing was cracked all down one side, stuck onto the block with some silicone looking stuff... nice! Oh, and there was no thermostat! Whilst ordering the thermo kit and housing i thought it'd be best to order belts for it too. Fast forward to today, couldnt pick up parts 'til lunch, so i set about nicking all the goodies fitted to the polo (stereo, cb, tsw's etc), got most of it in, went to collect parts only to discover that the thermo and housing were wrong! Delayed today's plans, fitted the belts anyway and its deffinatly pumping water better now. The only major draw back was me ringing off one of the locking wheel nuts while still attached to the polo :@ pics! Broken Polo Wheel swap begins One of the now replaced belts Quick engine shot Got the Father-in-law to weld a nut on the knackered nut to remove it while i continued with other jobs Doesn't look too bad tbh! Plans? Scrap the Polo as its had a smack at the front, and its getting quite crusty, and with little time and funds its not worth much more than ill get cubing it. The cordoba however... i can see some decent wheels (i only kept these for the tyres) and subtle height loss coming its way providing it behaves!

i'd have preferred the tdi, but like crazymonkey said, not bad for the price! I've done a good 100 miles in it already and it feels pretty good to be honest, there is an annoying vibration noise (not felt through the wheel) when whell is turned left, and breaks will need doing before long, oh, and a clutch as this one is non-adjustable(unless i fit a spacer for now). A part from that and a couple crusty patches on the odd arch, I'm happy! its got me out of s--- creek anyway!

Clutch itself gone or no adjustment on cable? Latter may be a case of removing cable and re-setting the 'auto' adjuster on 'box end?
* just remembered, although with a Polo you may know anyway....check Pedal box for cracking/movement when clutch depressed, V common on similar age Ibiza's
take a good look at Polo & 'Doba, you might be surprised how much fits mechanically.

i cant see any way to adjust it, but then i'm used to tinkering with 2cvs! ill have a better look tomorrow afternoon when I'm home from work, if not i will fit some home-made shims to get me by 'til next payday. as for the mechanics between this and the polo, everything i've thought about stealing off the polo is different to the 'doba.

Oh, and i forgot to mention.. it's already running 50/50 bio/pump diesel. The aim is to ween it onto full bio for cheapest possible running cost, and yes i know i will have to keep changing filters still, it'll be well worth it!

Yeah CB radio! I've got a TTI starter rig which i bought for convoys to/from 2cv meetings, but I'm starting to get a bit more into it. I managed to listen into a convo in California few months back and I've slowly been upgrading since. I managed to wangle an output amplifier and 'THE MODULATOR' aerial that my dad bought cheap from an amateur radio friend for nowt, but not been able to pick anything up locally or anywhere since fitting to this car. It's getting looked at when this friend and i get a chance, and maybe some day I'll become so 'sad' and get my full licence!

My sister had a cordoba clx 1.9 diesel as her first car... Speedo stopped working at 103k but she just went in and on and on (body was falling to pieces around the engine lol). You've done well, no worrying about turbos failing etc

PLUS. It's consistently gave 50mpg+ on runs! And that was using straight cooking oil at one stage.

it does have this plastic thing on.. should it have been taken off then? No, should still be attached loosely to cable after fitting. when you buy a new cable the 2 loops are hooked to the plastic sleeve, which means the cable is in the 'pull' position. after fitting the loops are then released which auto adjusts the cable. what a lot of people do is release this before fitting then wonder why the adjustment is slack. It is possible to re-do the loops to the tensioned position, ideally 2 people. Just an idea to try first before changing clutch?

Thanks olduns! Shall try that first Not done any mpg calculations as yet, it'll be nice to get 50+ on 100% bio. So far I'm impressed with it, I'm aware it needs breaks before long and like I said, clutch/cable. Just picked up some fresh oil as its overheated and thinned the oil haha!

Oh, anyone know how the rev counter works on these? Mine doesn't work and I assumed, as its diesel it would run off alternator/one of the belts? And oil light flashes.. Prob a sensor?

If this is anything like my old mk2 golf gtd I had a nightmare finding why my rev counter wouldn't work. Turned out its a simple and a little blue wire to the back of the alternator, the solder had broken between the alternator itself and the male spade on the plastic alternator cover where the terminals are. Hope that helps
