Hello
And welcome to my sale of my much loved land rover 1978 series 3 swb 88"
mot until feb 2014 and taxed until march 2014, its ready to drive away to a new home.
price is £1200 although will listen to sensible offers.
Please note: the vehicle has sat for a while, (months) and a slight drip on the transfer box has managed to develop and drain its contents, as such new handbrake shoes transfer box seals and transfer fluid will be supplied,(the vehicle has not been driven in this condition) as bought to replace but never got round to it. it has since been converted to a cab top and the van sides are no longer available.
the price is for the vehicle and not the stuff associated, it there is some parts you do not want. that's at your discretion, I will not be mmending the price based on this.
looks can be deceiving, although tatty on the outside, it is mechanically sound.
This vehicle has brought a smile to my face every time I have had the pleasure of driving it, unfortunately, work and travel commitments mean I must now reluctantly sell up.
I have owned this vehicle after purchasing it in august 2012. it has been a childhood dream to own and drive a landrover in my adult life, and this was a great priveledge.
The vehicle was bought as a running project, ans as such needed a bit of mechanical work, and tlc to get it how I wanted. my aim was for an agressive green laner, that could be abused, and still get me home after. and has since never missed a beat.
I have regularly taken it greenlaning, throughout essex, and although still running the standard 2.25 motor, it has done well (if you don't have a heavy foot) although please don't expect a brand new car (this is over thirty years old now, so a bit of vintage driving expireince may be needed)
the gearbox, transfer and diffs, all work as they should. (but please read below about the transfer box)
work that has been undertaken since my collection of the vehicle in 2012:
•head overhaul, including gaskets, valve seals, and a general overhaul.
•new copper brake lines and fittings. +40mm braided stainless flexi lines, slave cylinders, and new 10" brake overhaul on both axles, the braking system was also upgraded from a single line, to a dual line, servo assisted braking system, a vast improvement. new brake switch for servo assisted brakes.
•new temperature sender.
•+40mm pro comp es3000 shock absorbers, fited, with new split pins.
•new wheel bearings, front and rear, drive flange gaskets and bushes replaced.
•new steering ball joints, x4 (two on the steering boxes didnt need replacing, but are included as spares in the sale)
•battery relocation to the rear of the vehicle. (to aid new motor fitment)
•new aftermarket aluminum radiator, (belt driven fan removed) with mounts fabricated for stand alone electric fan, this is controled from a switch in the cabin, and a relay behind the dash.
•insa turbo special track tyres 16x7 huge tyres, lots of tread, although starting to show signs of cracking. still hold air, mounted to defender modular rims. original series 3 wheels and tyres x5 included in sale.
•clear lenses all round, with protective cages over front and rear lights.
•upgraded from sealed beam, to crystal clear, halogen h4 lamps.
•interior: mountney 15" steering wheel and boss, new rubber gaitors for gear, transfer and range levers. pool ball gear knobs.
•exterior:
it now sports a cab instead of the van back. this has long since gone. the filler strip is made from chequer plate. and can rattle a bit on long runs. the rear sliding glass has had new channels purchased and installed. however the locks were too far gone. there is currently no stops on this rear window.
the drivers/passenger doors were badly corroded on the bolts. when attempting to remove the door tops. as such require replacing. new manufactured doors/tops and glass channels have been purchased and will go with the vehicle.
four point harnesses are also installed to keep you secure through the rough stuff.
sid eopening tail gate, incorporating the original modified stable door handle. this is not visible from the outside.
Please note, all the following has been gathered during my ownership and is also included in the sale, although currently not on the vehicle:
•rover differential diff guards (weld on type not bolt on, very heavy duty)
•roll cage (as in pictures) feet have been removed to aid fitment. was due to be welded directly to the chassis, feet are present. and holes have been drilled into the floor ready to be lined up and welded in.
•x2 dickie seats for rear cab, one is missing its lower support, both in usable second hand condition.
•3.5 rover v8 (in need of an overhaul, although not in bad condition) 9.11 compression ratio, from an sd1 auto.
•series 3 rover v8 to series gearbox conversion plate
•illuminition electronic ignition for rover v8 distributor.
•custom one off, 5bar tread plate, aluminum steering box cover/guard
•cd player/ radio. with speakers. bought in very good second hand condition.
•48" farm jack, with mounts bolted to the roof/lower back of the landrover (anyone who has owned one will know these are essential to landrover ownership)
•land rover series 3 haynes manual.
•original series 3 steering wheel,
•new set of red ht leads.
•land rover series 2a one ton shackles (longer than the originals give roughly 1.5" lift)
•anything else I can think of, when you come to collect......
When I took it for the m.o.t, the landrover was said to be in good condition underneath, but as with any landrover of this age, it has had plates and repairs in its lifetime. as has the bulkhead and footwells. but I must state that it is not rotten. I would class its condition as good, usuable and rugged.
The electric fan conversion, means it no longer throws muddy water all over the distributor, this is a godsend, and I have only ever had to flick the switch on once, when the engine was idling for long over ten minutes. no overheating issues at all.
the exterior is rough, having been painted by hand a few owners ago. its not something that bothers me, but please bear this in mind when viewing. it is not by any means new.
the speedo has worked intermittently in my ownership, its never realy bothered me, although due to this the mileage reads 85,000 I doubt very much this anywhere near its actual mileage. the engine would suggest this is probably a lot higher than this.
the engine starts and drives as it should, although a little smokey on start up if your a bit heavy on the choke. I would probably put this down to worn carb/choke parts.
please note:
