been rolling round ebay and found these are not to sad on insurance and come up quite cheap for a reasonable one service/history wise.
also have retro interiors in shades of purpley braaan which i quite dig. i want a prosche pretty bad after driving a 911 on a redletter day. this could be a good starting point.
anything to know about these?

I would say so 3.0 S2 is the one to go for (if you have the money)! A friend of mine used to be the secutary for the Porsche club uk, she was always trying to get me to buy a 924 or 944, she had a 944 turbo and her husband (an ex-porsche mechanic) had a 911 3.2. He said that service history on the 944 is most important as the large 4 pots can be very expensive to fix! But if serviced properly they go on and on and on.
Early ones have a habit of rusting quite badly, but later ones where galvanized so rust aint and issue unless they have crash damage.

I had a 1986 Lux and a 1989 S2, but it's been over 12 years since I sold them.
Make sure it's been looked after properly - they can be expensive to fix, and my first one had a few bodged repairs that cost me to put right.
Timing and balance shaft belts should be done regularly; not a quick job so may have been skipped.
The heaters are apparantly controlled by vacuum, so check they all work as it can be a nightmare to fix.
Pop-up lights and electric windows can be a problem, motors apparantly. I had to replace a window motor in my second one, an S2 and it was the same as one from some Audi/VW in a scrappy.
Had to replace the CV joints and oil seals in the transaxle of my Lux.
The Lux had a (aftermarket?) glass sunroof, the S2 a factory steel one and the drain gutters on both had blocked - water should escape down by the rear spoiler.
The later ones had a much nicer, but less retro interior; dash was less plasticky and more curvy and seat material was more understated than some early models.
