Here's the one I saw in the UK a few years ago, late 90's I'd guess. DVLA says it came off the road in late 1998, shame. Saru, I see what you mean about the windows - on this one it's more like a chunky B-pillar, whereas on the early one it's a small pane, which I suppose was a look inherited from the previous model 929 coupe (fastback style one).

Here's the one I saw in the UK a few years ago, late 90's I'd guess. That one has Rotary Turbo on the side! Super-rare. Sad that it's been decommissioned. You're thinking of this 929/RX-4/Luce: Oooh, pillarless. But there was also a 121/RX-5/Cosmo (CD-series) of the same era with an opera/vent window: Unlike the RX-4, the RX-5 has a coil-spring rear end and 4-wheel discs in the rotary models. They had a stupidly tall diff ratio when new so they have a reputation among rotor-heads of being heavy and slow. Change the diff ratio and they go as hard as an RX-4 and handle better. And also an intervening 929/Luce between the fastback LA-series and the HB series that most of this thread has been about: The white one above is a pre-facelift sedan version. There is also a "hardtop" version with almost exactly the same bodyshell but frameless doors and a slightly different roofline: The post-facelift cars have the same nose as the beloved 929 wagons and I've seen at least one 929 wagon with the stacked headlights, too. But the wagons never came with a rotary AFAIK and were actually ran in parallel with the HB-series cars.

Alistairk, I bow to your greater knowledge. I've always known them as opera windows but vent windows makes sense. Terminology may vary around the world , but the portholes in the back of 1970s / 80s landau roof'd coupes like the Lincoln Continental and Chrysler Imperial are reffered to as "Opera" windows and are fixed. Opening ones in other yankie coupes are called vents. Thats where I take my belief from.

Yes, it was the 121/RX5/Cosmo model I meant with that similar centre window – odd that they didn’t call it 929 when in reality surely that’s all it was?
That hardtop-with-a-pillar sedan is weird isn’t it? I’ve got a picture at home of what would be the stack-light version but with only a single round headlight and sidelight below.

The white-with-brown roof Cosmo is what we call here the "Landau" RX-5/121. We only got them in gutless 1.8 and 2.0L piston 121 versions. A genuine rotary Landau is pretty unusual.
spottelaurel, I'd guess that AOE284 was sold in a country that legislated for round headlamps. Anyway, it's just crying for some natural slam and dish.
