Since the new rules have came in, any vehicle now has to be either insured or sorn'd. IE you can't have a taxed vehicle anymore without an insurance policy.
Does anyone know how long it takes for the DVLA to catch up with anyone who keeps a taxed vehicle with no insurance?
I have swapped my insurance over, so my pickup has tax and mot but no insurance. I have put it straight on ebay to sell, and fingers crosed it will be gone this week. If I sorn'd it, it would take a few days at least before the tax disc arrives at the dvla and it gets proceseed.
Has any anyone got an idea of how long I have got before I get a into trouble for this. I had hoped with the tax still on it, it would make it more likely to sell as someone can come and drive it away. If its still here more than a week or 2 I will sorn it anyway, but I am hoping I can get away with a few days before it shows up on their computers.

I've certainly got away with 2-3 weeks. I don't think there is any official grace period though

I am not sure how it works, at 5pm last night, my insurance was swapped, so in theory they could knock on my door today and bust me. But I could say I have sent the tax off to sorn it. I will gamble a couple of weeks, but it should sell ok anyway, there are not many around.

Given that it's all done by post, there HAS to be a small amount of grace given to allow a minimum of a few days for paperwork to go through the system. Like I said, I've had tax sat on the car for around two weeks without insurance on a few occasions (parked off road, obviously) and not yet had a problem.

It takes a month for it to show up on the computers I seem to remember something at work saying. (We make underwriting systems for insurance companies)

I've inadvertantly left it a couple of weeks twice now before remembering to post the old tax disc and not had problem.

I've just sold a car I left taxed and tested but swapped my insurance from it on the 1st and it sold on the 21st and the new owner insured it on the 22nd. 21 days uninsured but with the tax in the window, no letters from the DVLA yet.

The insurance database is sposed to be updated dayly, my trade policy certainly ism 5 days a week every eve at 7PM, seems little point in the police having cameras to pick up uninsured drivers if the database takes a month to update Having said that i've done the same for 10 days at the most and no letters came though.

I have got an ibiza on drive, its taxed, not insured for over two months, maybe longer. Does it have to be sorn'ed if its taxed and not insured?

Sorry for hi-jacking this thread, am more confused than ever now!! Just gone to SORN mine online, after the advice above, and it says SORN declaration not needed till 1st June (i.e when tax runs out). Even though not insured.

The MID definitely isn't updated daily, when I insured my Audi it took 3 days for me to be able to tax it online as it didn't show up on MID. I even rang up and got told to wait or get the insurance company to email a cover note which they don't do.

Good news for me, someone has put a deposit on my pickup and is collecting it Saturday, so its only 3 days in total where it has no insurance, which is spot on.

When your tax runs out on the 1st of June, you can go online and choose to SORN it or buy new tax. If you want to SORN it now, you have to glue your tax disc to a form and post it to the DVLA, they will refund you any money left on the disc and SORN your car.

I was told by DVLA that it'd take a couple of weeks and then it'd be a warning letter (swapped a plate from one car to another, both of which had to be taxed). Sold the old car quite quickly so didn't get the letter
