MGF prices seem to be fairly low, so there has to be a catch or sommat. Anyone had one of these, they seem pretty good, anyone have any ideas what they are like to run etc. Thanks

They are an excellent source of engines for silly projects, and wheels for dolomites, spitfires and marinas. Other than that I know fugg all.

:)I've MOT'd a few, though never actually repaired any. Mechanically they are pretty much a mid engined Rover Metro/100! Every one I've seen with more than 20k miles has had worn drivers seat covering [ie in shreds].

Can't believe no-one has shouted HEAD GASKET very loudly yet. I think this is the reason that they are cheap as everyone would rather have a "reliable" MX5 (not saying the MX5 isn't reliable, just that I'm fed up of hearing about it!).
But, the MGF does have charm and is much more appealing than a rubber bumper MGB (sorry MGB fans!).
HG problems can be overcome (although working on the engine can be fun!) and they aren't bad to drive from what I have heard. An MGF with smoked front lenses and a tickle with the low stick can look very tasty.

I have the cylinder head off one the now. Handle pretty well but let down by unreliable central door locking, seats (as Daverapid mentioned) and bloody Rover cylinder heads/water pumps! Timing belt was a bit tricky to remove because the engine mounting was in the road, I supported the engine, soaked the bolts in WD40 then carefully removed them. There is plenty scope for knackering the engine mounting bolts because the end of the threads is exposed to whatever the wheel throws up and the bolts are at an angle rather than vertical. Big coolant pipes that run from the engine to the front are thin steel and look like a weak point if you are not good at noticing speed bumps!

I've always been under the impression the MX5s are infinitely superior......and probably cheaper! Seen some as low as 800 (import Eunos', 1.6s) around! I wouldn't go for one of those though, I'd pick one up for 1500-2000

ITS NOT A HEAD GASKET PROBLEM ITS LINER "STAND PROUD" OF THE BLOCK The head gasket going is the symptom not the problem Which is why when you skim the head and fit a new gasket it goes again straight away The liners and the amount they protrude from the block is the issue, if they are low then they don't seal well enough Its made worse by the sudden thermostat opening and flooding one end of the water jacket with cold water causing the liner to shrink relative to the hot engine

MX5 would definately get my vote. How boring and predictable. The MX-5 is very common in its design and in numbers, it's a very boring car. The MG-F is a little odd, a little... different. To call it a mid-engined Metro is a little disingenuous but that's sort of what it is.

There are a couple of off the shelf (but darn expensive) supercharger kits for MGF's, would give it a handy bit of poke.

I love mgf's and really want one of the later zf versions, without the iffy hydragas(?) suspension. They sound pretty fugging awesome at full chat as well. Much more interesting than an mx5. Mid engined ftw!

my mum had an MG-F Trophy 160. That was sweet, my dad used to love it, and it went really well. She had it as a company car for 3 years and put about 80k on it, the headgasket did go, once, but apart from that there wasnt any faults.

The biggest problem with the MX5 is that it runs the risk of becoming far more like an MGB than first thought. It may be a good car (I've driven an MGB and liked that too) but it's boring because EVERYONE keeps saying you should get one!
In ten years time, all the glossy classic rags will have MX5s on the front just as there is far too much MGB content these days.
Therefore, the MGF is the best choice because it is different - which is what we love!!

If you do get one with an f'd headgasket, LandRover do a modification kit that should cure the problem once and for all that includes headgasket, steel shim gasket, uprated oil rail and bolts......rimming bros do it all for about £120 + drat but I suspect they are cheaper elsewhere. Otherwise, check front subframes for internal rot, coolant pipes and just the normal stuff....but being an MG (even a new one) someone somewhere will have the bits.....
