As the weather was good today, I thought I would crack on with the paint on the Skoda. Aim was to begin early, strip the trim, get it masked and fully primered by the end of today. Sounds easy. So after the usual faffing about and generally wasting time this morning ( ), I finally got to the lock-up to fetch it out at about 1.30, complete with Mrs Pog and the Poglets in tow because I have no other way to get there (and fetch the car home). Fiver's worth of fuel in, give it a crank. Nowt, and the battery goes flat. Attach focus via jump leads and try again.... after 10 mins it finally starts popping and spluttering. But will it run? No. Won't idle, totally kettled. By this stage I have nearly suffocated myself with the resultant carbon monoxide, the kids are screaming their heads off and the missus looks bored / frustrated. I can fix it. But I dare not at that juncture. Closed the door, went home. Now sulking. Cars are GHEY.

Did you remember to prime the carb via the lever on the fuel pump before you tried starting it? Better luck next time mate, cars are cerainly a challenge to my patience at times! You really going to paint over that cool colour scheme? I reckon it's ace just as it is! ;D

Yes indeedy, I find cars are always ghey at weekends when you're itching to make some progress.
(Last week I gave in and stuck a brand new (reduced price!) carb on the 3-door, which I couldn't afford since I had to buy another car for work, the Sierra then runs perfectly....for two days... now it's totally dead again. And I can't fix it 'cos my back's knackered, and even if I could fix it, I have no cash anyway).
I feel your pain.....

same here, wanted "just" change the cam belt on my Mums Lancia Zeta turbo.... after some really frustrating tool search ( every time i repair anything on this car, i bought some tools i never need in future) i managed to take of the cam belt. Unfortunately it was more than necessary and there are two marks at the crank. One factory made, one with a spot of paint. So which mark would you trust ? The factory made ? Wrong So, as a result i killed the engine.... so the head has to come off, and that seems to be impossible with the engine built in... and, after this is a french design, you can image how the engine bay looks.... another day, where it would have been better to stay in bed instead of going to the workshop....

Yep same here! you'll get it next time pog but its surely teh most valuable day shafted. we had to pick up ebay bargain standin old banger tv, so trusty second hand 'shat nav' device took us straight through city centre to to get us there! took 4evAr finally back to start on teh less than ideal MOT welding I had done on the sapph waging a bit of wag and waxoyl to keep out the rust critters, and finally coming close to fixing the crappy design lock actuator for the 4th attempt. whats so bad? because in my book this isnt progress! next stop, christening... I'll be going to the shows in a pumpkin at this stage!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Hope you get it sorted soon mind.....have to say though.... ....same here as well! Went back for reading week to do a stackload of work on my Sprint. All I got done was: - Put the Kenlowes on but not wired up (didn't have the fused relays or sheathing at the time) - Put new windscreen seal in - Cable tie the windscreen washer in and clean the throttle butterfly Then on Tuesday I came down with the cold from hell! So I haven't been able to revise, do my coursework or play with the car, just sat in bed coughing my lungs out. Now I'm back in Cov, coughing my lungs out and trying to do work instead! Great fun

No car work this weekend thank Fudge, after 3days spent driving a 120mile round trip to achieve sod all,
doing any job with anyone standing around or to any annoying deadline is a straightforward recipe for disaster.

Hmm. Still sulking. Maybe I will have another bash at it tomoz. Really need to get on with it, time is of the essence due to this weeks' SuperMinx purchase. Just really pi$$ed that I have to do yukky frustrating engine grubbing instead of lovely theraputic body work. Oh and if DaveRapid is watching... any chance of a new osr door. Mine seems to have aquired a large dent in it.

Then on Tuesday I came down with the cold from hell! So I haven't been able to revise, do my coursework or play with the car, just sat in bed coughing my lungs out. Must have been something in the air at Stoneleigh as I've been the same since Tuesday too! Pog, I'm sure its something dead simple and with a little un-disturbed prodding the cause will be found

As usual ,spent the first 1/2 hour looking for keys etc . Got stuck in to building a tow bar for me Merc . Got really involved ,in a little world of my own ,then missus arrives back from Tesco in a taxi. Frustratingly had to stop to unload all the shopping from the boot for her . Then had to stop to make food ,just couldnt carry on any longer without . Then cutting a big lump of 6mm plate with a grinder ,suddenly see some one standing next to me ,shes tottally oblivious to the danger ,sparks squirting out all over the place, its my daughters friend ! Christ I jumped out of my skin !! Funny that my kids are used to the welding /grinding dangers ,and even from little kids have waited to get past /talk to me etc when I look up . Scary !!

Oh and if DaveRapid is watching... any chance of a new osr door. Mine seems to have aquired a large dent in it. :)I'll have a look at the doors I've got to see how good they are, I seem to remember them being pretty grotty! I really only saved the doors from the scrap cars in Ireland cos of the glass, regulators, handles ect. Anyway, if there's a goodun I'll bring it to the Cambs/Beds meet on Wednesday if you like.

Sure can, I've got all that except the front wing, but they are fairly readily available new for roughly £30 last time I checked.

Hmm. Might be able to straighten it anyway. Has the usual 'bunny damage' on the corner. Also, further grovells.... I don't have a book on these any more... what is the desired gapping on (a) the plugs & (b) the points? It's a 1046cc.

I've got a couple of spare Haynes manuals so I'll bring you one. Plugs gap is 0.6mm [0.024inch] Points gap is 0.4mm [0.016inch] Totally off-topic, but I've just set up a scheme with a motor factor in Cambridge where by any Skoda Owners' Club G.B. member can be supplied and mailed parts for any car at trade price. [They will ask for your membership number though!]
