I had a Pageant Blue V-reg 2.0 HL back in 1990, cost me £15 plus another £13 to get it thru the MOT :-)
I wish they'd launched them with a hatch and 5 gears, would have been a winner...they were a bit soft but handled brilliantly, remember a blast down some local lanes with a carb'd XR3 and he couldn't lose me....I was probably seasick at the end though!!!

Someone I knew years ago had a hatchback Princess lurking on his drive... can't remember the story, but it might've been an experimental version or something... Dunno why they weren't 5 speed, when the Maxi was?

The hatchback version was the Ambassador....now so rare even rockin' horse poo is common.... Wasn't the Ambassador a later model? It's a long time ago, but I think this was an early Princess with a hatch, which made it a proper rarity even at the time... I've a feeling it was a fairly early Princess... His was a drive of retro tastiness: This was the late 80s, he had a then newish Manta in gold, his brother had a graphite 2.8 turbo Capri... ;D I lost touch with him many years ago...

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I think Crayford (or some similar top-choppers) did a few hatch conversions on the Princess

Holy thread revival! To answer the Q about Lotus rims. And the question about modified Princesses. So there you go. One exists.

A Princess has a lot of potential - the problem was the 'Broughamification' of the design between concept and production. That is to say the gratuitous adding of chrome trim along the wings, vinyl roof, Calligraphic badges and trinkets everywhere that worked against the very futuristic wedge-shape and sharp creases. Other problems are the long front overhang, the curve at the bottom of the front door window edges, the overly bulbous wheel arches, low door handles and the slightly-too-big rise in the bonnet to cover the windscreen wipers. I wont mention the rear lights that look like they've been installed upside down. Do away with those, add a little crease along the bottom of the doors and add some nice Alpina rims and there's a real diamond there. - Definitely more like a Giorgetto Giugiaro design of the time like a Golf or Scirocco Mk1. EDIT One thing not mentioned in this thread yet is the one-off Triplex 10-20 'Glassback' I'd say this fits the brief of 'modded Princess' to a tee I understand it's at the Gaydon museum.

most "modded" one i have seen was about 25 years ago.. a group of lads cruising in a convertible. by convertible i mean they had welded to the doors up and hacked to roof of and beaten over the sharp edges with lump hammer and graffiti'd it up. memorable yes...pretty no!

firm believer in the k.i.s.s and f.i.s.h principles.
