crushing a 15k car what idiots, I thought they auctioned off seized cars that were worth a few quid. would make sense doing that putting some money back into the economy instead of just crushing it. idiots. Yeah, it does seem a little silly - but I believe they get treated the same as any other no tax/insurance/etc type car - if no claim/resolution within a few days, it's disposed of. My advice to the OP would be to buy the tax in the short term and argue the toss with the seller. These days the OfT and Trading Standards take a dim view of sellers who are deliberately dubious - it might be a mistake by the seller of course (although I suspect he/she has not posted thus far on this thread) - but it seems like the beef here is to do with the sale of the car, not really with the DVLA and taxation. I'd probably take advice from Consumer Rights Direct or your local CAB, should you wish to pursue. I hesitate to use the term, but it does appear as though the DVLA are the innocent party here - although I agree with the above point of asking why a tax disc was sent out/issued without cleared payment...

The strange bit to me is how the DVLA managed to get the registered keeper changed before realising that the the cheque had bounced.

The strange bit to me is how the DVLA managed to get the registered keeper changed before realising that the the cheque had bounced. Where there are loopholes, people will exploit them without thinking twice about the consequence of others. A shame that a few spoil car ownership for many really. My thoughts are similar to those of BlueFox a few replies up from this one. DVLA may be silly etc. in handling this situation, but ultimately it is down to the PO of the car.

Which is pretty much what I said right at the beginning of the thread. I am now wondering though if the timescale suggests that the seller knew EXACTLY what he was doing.
