"Ford replaced the super-cool 1972 original Granada with a boxy, steroidal Cortina clone in 1977, and all the coolness was gone; was it coincidental that The Sweeney ceased just a year later?"
WHAT??? Well, I think the Mk2 Granada is quite a suave looker...

Not sure what idiot made that list up....nice enough cars most of them but hardly memorable. Where are all the Japanese cars It has been said that British car manufacturers only survived so long because they followed Japan's lead in the seventies!!!! Bring on the abuse ;D

Here's mine...not necessarily the most iconic, but what I'd call 'landmark' mass-production cars...which obviates the need for me to mention the Countach, Stratos etc etc etc....not much Brit-tin on here, mainly because the British motor industry spent most of the 1970's either on strike, or resting on its laurels and selling rehashed 60's stuff like the Marina and Allegro.

Another half assed list constructed without a broad knowledge of the subject or decent research methinks. It's like they just wrote down the first ten 70's cars they though of and went with that.

Where's ANY of the fantastic Japanese cars of that era? Pretty wibblepoo list IMO. The 1970's saw some fantastic muscle cars from all over the globe and to end up with that lot as a "greatest-ever" is pretty sad.
I couldn't make a greatest-ever mind you, I'm a bit of a car slut.. I'll have one of each please. ;D

Usual carp from some half-ar53d geezer who probably wasn't even around at the time......Marina based on Minor mechanicals......er NO...DERRRR. The Marina is more Triumph than Minor and NONE of the front suspension is the same....but it can be modified to fit Minors. Sadly, Joe Public reads this drivel and believes it...... Yep, just read his bio........

much as i like the journalism on msn cars its usually pretty clueless! the jag xj-s was a mechanical and electrical failure, and none of them are overly memorable. it needs a refined title, otherwise a datsun, mazda, pontiac and a ferrari or two is required.

:-[I'm embarrassed [and honest enough] to admit that I believed the Minor suspension on Marinas myth! Well bearing in mind a 1300 Marina has torsion bar front suspension, an A series engine and a live axle on leafs I think you could say it is "based" on the engineering of a Minor. Doesnt mean bolt on swaps are possible. Do 1300 Marinas also use "a series" gearboxes and diffs or are they all the Triumph derived unit?

Although Marina do use the same type of front end as a Minor, to say they were the same would be like saying any modern car with struts uses the same suspension as a 60's one. It's just a type of suspension, just one that wasn't widely adopted, much like transverse front leaves.
I would certainly add the Citroen GS to the list and for Japanese cars probably the Datsun 120Y and 100a, the Mk1 Civic and Toyota Corrola and Celica. And what about the Mk1 Fiesta and Mk2 Escort ...where are they. So many others worth a mention... Lada or Skoda Estelle? Volvo 240? Renault 5 and 16? Saab 900? Pug 104 or even the 504? Lancia Beta? Merc w123, Porsche 928? Even the Viva was surely a good seller?

I think some people get the fact that the Marina was intended to replace the Minor confused and think it was based on the Minor.
I like how he pretends the 3.0 and 2.0s Capris never existed, sticks his head firmly up VW`s ar5e like every other amateur and professional car pundit/journalist on the planet and then has a good old fashion laying into sesh with British Leyland, Dolomite aside. Cutting edge, inventive thought provoking journalism, there.
It is only a rubbishly top ten list on MSN, though, how good was it going to be?

I was pleasantly surprised to see the Avenger mentioned, but its surprising that the Escort and Cortina - usually the first/second highest selling cars in any given year in the 70s - have been left out.
He should have stuck to 10 best British cars of the 70s, and replaced the Golf/127 with UK built cars.
Any semi serious list of the best 70s cars of the world would delete the Granada, XJS, Dolomite, Cavalier, Marina and Avenger and replace with the below:
Renault 5 ( a hatchback from launch unlike the 127) Honda Civic Alfasud at least one model of Corolla or Sunny to demonstrate growing Japanese dominance Mercedes 73-79 S class preferably - a 450 6.9! BMW 2002 turbo or Saab 99 Turbo

I don't think it was supposed to be a best `70s cars list to be honest, just a list of cars people would remember for one reason or another. Ceratainly a lot more interesting than the usual MSN car lists and it doesnt really matter about the innaccuracies and bias I just fancied taking the p*ss out of it.
