This is aimed more at the Admin than anything to see if there is anything that can possibly be done to allow longer URL's on this forum?
Why do I ask? Because Photobucket (the new and horrible one which we had no choice in) doesn't allow re-naming of photos unlike the old one. This means any photo I upload from my phone won't work on this forum any more.
I have used Tinyurl extensively throughout some threads in order to reduce the URL to a length acceptable by the forum, but I've just had a PM from someone saying that nearly all of my images in my Escort 'readers rides' thread are no longer working.
I'm now at a loss....I can't change the filename in Photobucket (obviously this is a photobucket issue, not ProBoards), TinyURL obviously, for some reason, has stopped working with most of my photos and the only answer I can see is to re-upload them all again. But then I'm having to save every photo individually from P/bucket, rename them all and then uploading & duplicating the same set of photos that work elsewhere on other forums, many times over.
I know it's easy to suggest going to Imgur or Flickr etc...but that's not addressing the issue that seems to be becoming just that....and issue where on a daily basis more and more threads are not displaying images because this forum only allows URL's of a certain length.
I've got 16,000 photos on my Photobucket account and over half of those are posted on here. It's a logistical nightmare to move everything and a practical impossibility to find every one of my photos on here and re-link it.
If the URL can be lengthened then this solves the whole issue in one go. For everyone. Especially as more and more people are using their phones for uploading photos (something that rarely happened back in 2008 when I joined, let alone before that)
Photography and image linking is a massive part of Retro Rides and Photobucket is a massive part of a lot of peoples photographs. I'm on here a lot less at the moment simply because it's taking me approx 5 times longer to post up photos than it used to. Part of that is due to Photobuckets new and awful set-up, but a large part of it is also thanks to Proboards having a limit on URL length.
Any ideas gratefully accepted??

Nothing we can do, we are slaves to Proboards... and Photobuckets ridiculous idea of what a URL should be. This isn't really a proboards issue, it is Photobucket who have messed up by increasing the length of their URLs, in the age of imgur short urls it is a massive oversight on their part. That being said I'm sure Proboards new version will support longer URLs, but I'm waiting before upgrading due to potential other bugs. My advice (as you alluded to) is to never use Photobucket for anything ever ever ever (I have said this before this current snafu). imgur.com is better, faster, easier to use and free.. or for a more integrated community of photographers (particularly strong for car stuff) flickr.com is awesome (worth paying for Pro). You should be able to bulk transfer your images to Flickr from Photobucket... using Migratr : www.callingshotgun.net/about/migratr/

apparently the url length limit of 116 chars is being addressed in proboards ver5, which they are rolling out universally this month

None of my old, already uploaded, photos have been hit with the long filename? The only issue I had in that respect was the first batch I uploaded when I was first dumped with the 'improved' site and they got the massive scrambled name. But then I turned off the 'option' that was automatically 'on' for scrambling and have had no issue since.

I think part of the issue for me is loading pics straight from my phone to photobucket. With the 'old' style site, you could just rename the file name to something shorter and more suited (I have a 'code' system I give all my photos) but with the new Photobucket site, there is no option to rename any files. I really don't know why?
The issue here is that 99% of my Escort build thread (as an example) were taken on my phone because it was a short build and never really intended to be a 'full story' build. I sent all the photos to Photobucket through the app on my phone (dead easy, simple and just what's needed for this sort of thing) but posting them on this forum (and only this forum) they don't work. But I can't change them.
This meant I used Tinyurl to shorten all the image names but this isn't exactly consistent and each time I check the thread, some pics show and some don't.
The other issue that not being able to rename photos brings is when loading pics into Photobucket from the web. Again, previously, you could rename them. Now that they've removed this option, copying photos across from Facebook then posting them on here doesn't work because Facebook gives all images a really long file name.
DarrenH, many thanks for the info on the new Proboards update. If they really do address this issue then it'll make some of the really annoying glitches that have occured as a combination of the current Proboards only accepting short IMG URL's and Photobucket not allowing you to modify your own file names!
David, I know what you're saying about file length names, but until Proboards looks at this, the issue will get worse, not just because of Photobucket, but also due to increased use of mobile phone images and FB photos, both of which are becoming far more commonplace on forums nowadays. It's a bit archaic if we have to save all images to a computer first, rename them all then upload them again just because forum software will only accept short URL's.
As for moving 16,000 photos, I've never had an issue before and unless I find every single photo I've every posted on the internet and re-link it, it's not really possible to migrate to another platform. Start anew maybe, but retrospectively jump ship? Pretty much impossible.

Yeah, they will all start to work once we get the version 5 upgrade... I just nervous about what else will break so I have held off pressing the upgrade button.

the only feature I really miss, say in comparison to vbb, is pop-ups or email notifications for private message.
v5 they are adding nondescript notifications (not sure if it covers the above) and also attachment facility which i'm not sure is a great idea. much prefer to control my own images and hosting, as they inevitably disappear down a hole with errant forum upgrades or host issues. especially on a site like this which is heavily image driven

Did you know you can delete the [ url]....[ /url] part of the link (either end of the img tags) leaving just the [i mg].........[/i mg] part and it'll still work eg; this [U RL=http://s291.photobucket.com/user/blu-scoob/media/Fester%20track%20car/IMAG0517_zpsf7d8bd8c.jpg.html][I'm G]http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll289/blu-scoob/Fester%20track%20car/IMAG0517_zpsf7d8bd8c.jpg[/IMG][/URL] can also be put like this "
it still puts the pic up but the link is almost 1/2 the size!

I really would recommend Imgur as an alternative, if you are doing a thread with lot's of pics, you can just get a list of URLS with the IMG tags to copy and paste into the thread, resized and working.
I used this for the pig civic pic dump I did and it took a fraction of the time that it used to on Photobucket!

The new version of proboards accepts the the long proboards links so thats one problem that should go when proboards force the change over in the near future. Although I suspect other problems will result from the change over.

The top one on your post BLU has a link so you can click on it to go to the Photobucket page for the picture, the one underneath does not.
