Hey guys,
Unfortunately I have realised that if I want my car on the road any time soon, I'm going to have to flag the paint job for the time being. I have a little bit of panel beating that needs done to remove some growing rust so it's not going to be 1 straight color anymore (patches of primer ftw). So I've decided decided that I might go for some kind of rat look.
Keep in mind that I don't want to destroy the car by letting rust take it over, just something that looks a bit dodgy and will give some kind of sleep appearence. I already have a spare bonnet and I've got some ideas for that, but what else can I do (on a pretty much very very cheap budget)? What would you guys do?
Car is a bright yellow Isuzu Gemini Coupe (just like the Kadett C coupe).
Cheers

satin black rattle cans, don't even bother cleaning it, just mask up the windows, lights and trim and spray it, well ratty. As demonstrated here

Nah, going more for the rat-effect, rather than wack painting styles.

Matt white, with pinstriping done in red oxide primer and grey primer, old school hot rod and custom stickers in the rear side windows. Very low steels with white bands. don't fix the rust, yet.
or
Rub it down with a brillow pad and park it at the beach.
Bullet Holes FTW!

Yep just flat it back with scotchbrite and leave the patchy primer If the wheels and stance are right it`ll look killer ;D I actually preferred my Kadett when it was in primer with the wheels all polished and sitting low ;D Was funny seeing peoples reactions on the motorway "Why has he got those nice wheels on that car" ;D

I reckon red oxide would look pretty good-- bit like this from the ooof thread... especially if you've got some nice polished bits to contrast...

Yeah either red oxide it or just primer it with a blow over of laquer.

How many more times, matt black (or matt anything!) does not equal rat-look!!!!! That's more 'hot-rod' style, if anything! Rat look, rough sand your existing paint to its breaks through to primer in areas, bare metal in other, let some surface rust break through, if your brave!

I think true rat look can only come with the pasasge of time. So that's what you'll need to replicate. Often with a set of very shiny new looking wheels and an extreemely low ride height.

I'm pretty certain our squareback falls under the category of rat-look. Rusty (but treated so it don't get any worse, and it's only superficial anyway), slammed and on a set of alloys. Plus it's got a decent engine to power it along. Gotta admit though, I have always been a fan of red oxide as a way of making a car look good, and on the cheap.

From what i know, the term "RatRod" was originally coined in america buy the show car owners for the people who rode beat up rides with borrowed/bodged together parts done on a budget...often as an insult! the paintwork was normally just a protection matter as not of particular importance to the riders, usually hand painted or roughly sprayed just to stop it completely falling to pieces. eventually it became a term to coin anything that looked like sh*t but had a mad- set up under the bonnet. Ratty is just 'done on a budget' or 'still driveable' (in my eyes anyway). Not to be confused by Ed'The daddy' Roth and his Ratfink character as if you look at ed's cars and/or pictures youll notice they were pretty well made and nice and shiny...just had F**K-off engines sticking out! so if you want a ratty look....your doing it right by having a meagre budget. people generally sprayed things matt black to hide alot of the sins. you cant have bare metal over here or your car wil only last a couple of winters then your feets will fall the the floor! and panels will fall off! just slap whatever colour you want on it but don't spend more than 50 quid an dyou'll have a naturally 'ratty' car

I don't plan to keep it rat forever, just until I can afford a paint job.
I don't really want to spray the entire car in rattlecans either, too expensive for what I'm going for. Think I'll just sand down a few patches and stuff, see how it goes.

Rat look, rough sand your existing paint to its breaks through to primer in areas, bare metal in other, let some surface rust break through, if your brave! matt black is easily part of the "rat" look, if anything something thats MADE to look rat with deliberatly distressed components is further away, if i got a car with bare metal, filler, dents, rust etc i quite often blow it over with red oxide or matt/satin black cos its easy and stops the thing gettin any worse. Rat equals functional and kept road worthy but not prettied up, and in my eyes, deliberatly making the car look worse is prettying it up, ESPECIALLY when they normally have nice wheels fitted as well so you know they have been built like it and not aged into it..

for me, and i know others here agree, you cant re-create rat, its just something that happens over time. however, i do like the look of primered cars, just don't consider them rat.

Stick some anchor wax on it and enjoy!
