Welcome aboard DRW!
I think that a large amount of motoring journos are into 'proper' cars, unfortunately the people who actually spend the money in 'Smiths aren't.

I think its odd that everyone seems to have got their knickers in a twist about a car magazine clearly not aimed at them...
The amount of people that read magazines in their local "library" (ie Smiths) it is difficult for niche car magazines to keep going (particularly when publishers want them to make more and more profit) ..
I guess everyone would only be happy with a free magazine all about retro cars.... ....

Some interesting comments on here, guys. A shame so many of you are knocking it before the first issue's even been finished - never mind printed or distributed. As has been pointed out, it's not aimed at Retro Rides readers. Nor is it purely for people who can't afford what's in Evo. It's for those who modify their cars to get the best out of the driving experience. Or something like that. I'm one of the freelances on this new mag. I also worked with Bryn back in the day. Beaten-up Jag XJS. 20th Century Boy on the stereo. Can't get cooler than that. But there's just no real market for a retro kind-of mag. About ten years ago I had an idea for a magazine with skate attitude, that would fit into what's now a cross between retro and tramp drifting. It wouldn't sell, even today. At best, most people would read it in Smith's, or borrow their mate's copy. They'd probably criticise it too. Please just remember we're all enthusiasts of what's increasingly becoming regarded as an antisoclal hobby. Fifteen years ago my everyday car was a Mk1 Escort that I'd sprayed matt black. In aerosol. Outdoors. In the rain. Yes, I now own a TVR, but I've still got that Escort. And I still love old cars - providing they're built to go fast. Love and peace... D Welcome, Great points, i often get one-two mags a month on avarage, and one of those is regularly PPC. it covers a lot of bases imo. but the lack of retro/streetmachine type buying market is pretty worrying. i admit i'll have a browse in some mags, and if theres nowt to get my teeth into or of interest (which was teh case of retro cars in the later days) i'll leave it, but not read it. Good luck with it all.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

I've put a my-cars list on the other topic. Feel free to decide from that whether motoring journos are into 'proper' cars... Even those who write for Auto Express, believe it or not. Besides, a lot of modern cars really are quite good, you know.

...Besides, a lot of modern cars really are quite good, you know. Heretic! Burn the unbeliever! (and welcome ) I think most realise that mag's not aimed at 'us', but it's about things automotive, and thus being discussed on an automtive forum... nothing personal I'm sure (except maybe Tarka's post ). If anything posters are hoping it's not a waste of journalistic talent. Been flicking through a box of old late '80s Performance Car - would this be the Evo of it's day? - and there seems far more in depth content than most of the more recent mags I have read... this my imagination?

Pistonheads in print form.... hmm. Presumably it will be full of IT and management knobbers chugging themselves silly over each others TVR's and Caterhams, and bickering over which tyres are the 'best' and debating how much faster they can get from home to the local 'Porcelanosa' tile and bathroom shop on Optimax juice compared to ordinary unleaded. this is an interesting thread, particulalrly I you take the view that IT mgt knobbers (and these new style of mag) are the kind of people us RR'er need. they buy the 30k hothatches brand new, get stung on the depreciation, tart about with ripseed sh!te/tuning etc. 10+ years down the line these cars are ripe for us RR'ers. we don't get stung on cost, know roughly what niggles the cars has, what mods work and still get the grin factor. don't be too harsh on 'em- they are after all proving us a service I won't buy the mag tho as its not my scene, likewise top gear mag, evo etc

A magazine written for people who like to watch programmes presented by these two TV legends. - Got Foundation??!! There is a place in the market for Evo which is well written and has fantatsic photography - there is no place for a shat alternative "mini in the park" a couple of years back hired this pork-sword-cruncher as the guest presenter/PA etc. dull......

doesnt lookn very advertising to me to big budget to me although it could be quite good for the types who run such machines, alot of the 25is year olds round my way run evo's,one has a 400bhp ev06 his its insured through his mum and dad with marks and spencers for only £280, so insurance isnt always a dream killer Doing it properly/legally often is though I haven't seen the mag yet, obviously, but I'm looking forward to it

My Jag cost over £48k 12 years ago, but is now worth less than a bag of French Fries. But isn't there a part of you that wants to read about your future car long before you buy it? I mean, I quite fancy an Astra VXR, but I'll wait till they've been round the clock, thanks...

I also have a stack of old Performance Car mags. They were much the same as Evo is today, if perhaps a little more real world. The writing style's not changed one bit either.

Ahh, son of William. Ola amigo, good times... I do believe the phrase was 'with a faint waft of oversteer, there's no time to admire the scenery at this pace...' ;D

Have I missed something here? A new magazine is released that's not aimed at us and then we have three pages complaining about the content? Have you seen the latest issue of Kitchen Garden? RUBBISH...it's not even about our kind of cars. It sucks. www.kitchengarden.co.ukAs I was reading this thread I was formulating just such a response, but you've summed it up perfectly. Best of luck to all involved with the mag.

I've got a packet of skips here if you're interested in a swap - could maybe even throw in a mint humbug. I bought this month's Evo for the Alfa 8C feature and have thoroughly enjoyed it - tis a good read if a little above my financial horizons. <edited due to medication related spelling mistakes>
