Good Evening all................. having sold a tax free classic (in bits) to a guy that was going to banger race it (sorry but it was a mobile rust -bucket from a British Leyland stable!). As it wasn't going on the road I did'nt bother with the Registration document and do not have the new owners address. He was a classic/retro enthusiast so is one of the good guys. This evening I was going to fill in the Registration Document to tell our wonderful, inexpensive, helpful and (apparently) even public serving DVLA that the vehicle was scrapped.
But the tick box or section of the form does'nt appear to exist and according to the DVLA web site I either have to SORN it every year or provide a COD (what fish have to do with this I don't know). So I think I have to write to DVLA every year and tell them the vehicle is 'off road'
Any ideas ? (sensible ones that don't suggest a revolution please only )
Keep the classics going and save the planet.

First of all:Don't tell them you didn't send the V5 off at the time - they will try and fine you for not notifying them of a change of keeper. These fines are built upon very shaky legal ground and the DVLA will usually fail to appear in court if you dispute them, but it's a headache you could do without and is easily avoidable.
Send the DVLA a letter stating that the vehicle was broken up and sold for scrap on X date (when you sold it to the trader) but you are still getting tax reminders for it. To further draw a line under the matter I'd personallyalso claim I sent them the V5 with the change of keeper on it at the time (they have no way of knowing if it was lost in the post or even lost internally) but I can't tell you to do that because it would be dishonest.

The V5 says: "If you have broken up the vehicle yourself, you must either tax it or tell us you are keeping it off the public road by making a SORN, until you take it to an ATF* or tell us you no longer have it." *Authorised Treatment FacilityWrite them a letter telling them you no longer have it.

DVLA don't seem to realise that things get lost in the post (or they lose them more likely)
we're having problems with that at the moment. Sent a form off with the tax disc to claim a refund and declared it SORN at the same time (checkbox on the form) about 5 weeks ago. last week we got a fine saying we hadn't SORNd it, even though I'm sure it said "to contact them if you hadnt heard anything within 4 weeks-yet they send a fine before that 4 weeks was even up). guess one rule for us and another for them eh? and they wonder why people hate their guts.
guess Ive got a nice fight on with the DVLA to keep me occupied.
Sorry rant over - tried sorning it online but the logbook reference number wasnt recognised, emailed them several times about it and not one reply, turns out they don't even have it on record that I emailed them, how convenient that all my other emails make it to their recipient except the DVLA.

The last time i sold a motor 'spare or repair' the bloke sent a couple of dodgy types with an old transit transporter ..... they told me to fill in the 'i've scrapped it' bit on the V5 and send it off. I refused, i told em they were now the owner of the car,so they'd have to fill in the form with their details, then i'd send it off ... no way was i opening myself up to possible hassle that way.It was in my favour that they'd travelled quite a way to get car, and i was bigger than both of em lol .......
