I would expect the short term insurers are not going to be very interested in hearing you explaining why you want to insure a car without an MoT for one day. It's not a question of them not paying out, it's a question of them refusing to insure it. Incorrect I'm afraid. I recently bought a car with no MOT and insured it for a week with one of these temporary insurance companies. Drove it to the MOT which it then passed. I wasn't taking out a full years policy for a car I was intending to keep for a couple of weeks. I had no problem getting insurance for that purpose.

I'm not condoning driving a car all that distance unless you are 100% sure it is roadworthy but:
1) ANPR does not flag up vehicles with no MOT. 2) Driving a car without MOT will usually only incur a fine of around £60, you will not get points nor will your vehicle be impounded. 3) There is no limitation on the distance you are allowed to travel to a pre-booked MOT. However...
4) Some insurance policies do stipulate that the vehicle must have valid VEL and MOT for the insurance to be valid and they do not mention anything about travelling to an MOT. Their arguement would be that you do not have to wait until a vehicle's MOT has expired before taking it for another, in fact you have a full calendar month prior to the expiry and will be given a certificate for 13months MOT when it passes. If you were pulled in this situation you would be in a pile of expensive trouble.

Mission aborted.....Partly because I couldn't get ready in time, and partly because I am never that lucky. If it were the car on its own, I would not have hesitated, but the big flatbed trailer just added too much of a complication.
And believe me, I know about having the book thrown at me. Many, many years ago, I had my day in court for some driving silliness. Despite it being IMO relatively minor transgressions, I got the harshest sentence of the day, and ended up with fines about five times higher than a serial burglar who had robbed 17 houses in 3 days.....Still, I will leave my thoughts on the criminal justice system for another forum.

I've typed this up a few times before on here butr couldn't find it.
I drove my UK registered but left at my parents house in FRance for a while way past tax and mot expired. I insured it and drove it back to the UK to a prebooked MOT. This was back in 1998 - no bother back then.
