Thanks Slater, that is why I do like them so much, very under rated as far as exposure and commoness is concerned. I hope someone here has one, or had one, or knows someone who did.

There's a guy on oldschool.co.nz with a couple.
Also, I believe someone linked to, though maybe not on here. A High Octane video excerpt of one with a Impreza WRX engine and running gear in it.
Ah, found it!

I swear the farmer in my village owns about 50% of the worlds total Brats.
He has about 30-35 of them! Some are scrap, some are a bit rotten, some are solid and some are absolutely mint!

Love 'em, played with one a bit off-road and they're amazingly capable for a vehicle with fairly low ground clearance, though you can adjust the torsion bars to give greater ground clearance with a spanner. The standard engine is quite underpowered but good to use and torquey. Only one big problem - rust, I remember a local shooting estate scrapping one that must have only been about 7 or 8 years old in the mid-90s because all the major panels were see-through. Insurance isn't bad, I got a quote for one last year for around £700 (20 y.o, rural postcode, no NCB)

Loads and loads of those round here. A lot of the farmers have them.
A couple of my friends have four of those things between them. One of them is being restored to standard. It is very hard to find body panels for them. Subaru have sold out of most bits and the rest of the ones you see about are usually dented to hell. They rust quite badly too.
One of the pick-ups my friend owns has a turbo engine intalled and they used to take that round Castle Combe circuit on track days.
They are quite good off-road as there is quite a bit of ground clearance, helped by the flat-four engine being able to be mounted higher. Average fuel consumption on the road is around 25mpg. Not brilliant, but better than a Land Rover!

When I say not brilliant, but better than a Land Rover, I mean the fuel consumption, not the whole car. Nothing is better than a Land Rover at what it was designed for!

Known as the MV in the uk, Brat in north america, and Brumby in Australia. This is my daily, owned it for about 3 years now, powered by the stock 1800 flat-4.. They can rot for england and farmers kill them, the usual places for rust plus just behind the cab and around the wing mirrors. The flat-4 engines are staunch, maybe a little underpowered, but the lightness of the vehicle makes up for it. They cruise nicely at 70-80mph, though ive mud and snow tyres on mine so it gets a little noisy. Off road they are pretty good, they don't have the clearance of Land Rovers nor the power obviously, but can hold their own in fields, mud, and light rough terrain IMO. They have high and low ratio 4wd- another thing to look out for is to make sure both ratios engage. Extras are to the mininum, stock interiors feature a lovely radio with no FM or tape player, usualy all-vinyl seats, nice hard functional plastics make up the dash. Sourcing used spares can be a problem. edit: reminds me, ill get around to sticking up some pics in readers rides.

great stuff aux! I love these things and will have one sooner or later. Yours looks cracking. Whats the MPG like?
Ebay seems to be a good place to sell one but maybe not so hot for buyers, they are never cheap on there. So I will have to wait for one to come my way via other means.

To be honest ive no idea what the mpg is, i can tell you they aint too good This one looks better in the pics methinks, had a fair bit of welding done on the rear arches, the bottom edge of the drivers side door is rotten. Yeah get one, you wont be sorry, id say pay between £500 to £1000 for one with a test and no welding to be done.

I used to look after one for a local farmer. It wasn't particularly rotten but as he drove it like Solberg it would generally need a clutch, brakes and suspension parts every time he brought it in!

I am pleasantly surprised at the reports of there being many n certain places..... over the country.
I will keep my eye open to see if there is anything closer to Kent, where I am.
Keep any other comments comming please.
Thanks AUX for the feedback.

About 25mpg average road use. -------------------------------- There's a really early one running about locally, about X-registration if I remember correctly. I'm sure the elderly owner has no idea about how excited one of my friends gets when he sees it! Mike

I tried to follow one I saw a while ago, to flag him over, but the traffic and lights an right of way at roundabouts soon had me out of view...... so I never got to pull him over, but I do get excited by the very few I do and have seen on the road. (about 3 or 4 in total) Would love to get one in reasonable nick and then get it looking real good and different wheels etc.

I've heard that there are a lot of them up in the north-east for some reason. A lot of them in scrap yards up there too.
My friend is having trouble getting good panels to restore his one, as nearly everything available is rusty or dented - or both! Last time he checked Subaru still had some new tailgates available, but they were expensive.
I've been trying to find a photo of a really early one to post on here, but I can't find anything! They've got different front and rear end styling - and probably other differences too.

these scoobs are great! occasionally see some pickups around, saw a hatch version (guess they're derived from the same thing, same front end, drivetrain etc) last month. the estates give me the horn, haven't seen one in years tho!
