Tough thread to name, this one. This project has no age, nor manufacturer...... bear with me: This morning, I started an epic roadtrip. Not epic due to distance, more epic due to speed.... 1.6 8v on a carb. Got knows how many horses are left, but even Tesco arent interested in them. This would also be the first test of my new (old) trailer AND new towbar, all fitted myself. Nothing like hitting it running!! My route took me past the local services at Knockhill.. some nice machines around here... So after 2 months since putting down the deposit (I hope this hasn't set the pace for this build!!) I got the chassis home. 200 miles in a clapped out Vitara averaging 40 the whole way was a test of patience, but as the sun began to set, I reached the base of operations!! Hauled out of the trailer myself (these Locost chassis' really are light!!) and placed it on the creeper. It fits the pokey lean-to at the side of my house! Thats really where the idea came from. I want something I can play on when its raining, and my other 4 (yes... 4) cars wont fit the garage. Thats my excuse! One brief tidy later and we're tucked up for the night. Now the big task... What to put in it!!! ;D ;D ;D

I like your commitment! Jump into a project with no firm plan ;D
Did you get any front wishbones, Sierra / Cortina uprights, rear trailing arms, Escort axle with it ??
Powertrain-wise, RWD packages are limited now. The usual Ford suspects are too old. Bike engines are a bit OTT and need too many bespoke parts. MX-5? Nissan 180SX/ 200SX? I've a friend fitting a Mazda KL V6, but matching it to a RWD box.

Well done! That is exactly the reason I now have the gearbox kart, it fits in the workshop and I can play in the rain What are your plans? Bike engine or car? If you go bike, I urge you to think about a V-Twin or RSV4 engine or a crossplane R1, all for the noise

Will I fancy trying for a proper identity on the IVA rather than q plate, plus playing to the original Locost ethos of tight budget.
Mx5s are today's escorts sadly. So many are rotten now with reliable compact rwd lumps. I reckon I will try to find one of those and plate transfer it. My aim is 200 quid or less in a donor.
That said, if something else interesting comes up in budget, I may be swayed.
As far as the chassis goes, it's a live axle original design, so modifications to run IRS will have to be made regardless. Once I have a donor I'll start re engineering the rear to accept it.
Would love to throw a Toyota 4age in, but rwd boxes for them are so thin on the ground. Further issues include the "Scotland penalty" whereby all the decent cheap cars I ever see are south of the border!!!

Bike engines are ok if your not using it much, i've spoken to a few 'kit car' owners who have done this and use them often, the engine life is practically halved in something like this, not because of driving an extra wheel but the extra air it has to push through. I'll probably get shot down in flames but i have no personal experience, just going by what i've been told.

There'll be no flaming in this thread unless is from an exhaust.

I'd just keep it simple, leave a live axle in there, and then a Zetec and Type 9. Will be fast enough to outrun most cars upto 3 figures+ mph.

Firstly i love your trailer toy collecting antics, i thought i was the only one who did such things . Zvh, type nine and a pinto powered Sierra diff and prop reasonable power, reasonable price to to build parts are fairly easy to get hold of to.

But unless I kill a Sierra, not easy to get with a V5.
That's why I'm leaning more to the mx5, they seem to be outnumbering scrap rwd fords these days (whoever thought this would happen??)

Nice build, bookmarked As for the engine... I'd love to see a screaming little NA rotary in there but that's just me.

Just bookmarked this. I did one a few years back, pre IVA but did an SVA. A greatly supported movement is thee Locost. Is this a Ron Champion or Chris Gibbs (sometimes haynes roadster), or A N other chassis? Have you found the Locostbuilders yet? Heres mine from the day it left with the new owner.

Found locostbuilders a decade ago (no joke), that's me just getting round to starting it.
It's a Chapman from what I can work out. Not too fussed on that though because I dare say it will be chopped about a bit...
That orange one looks stunning Rich, did you do a build thread on it?

Well, I want it basic for IVA simplicity, but will inevitably put my own twist and touch on this build. Nothing against the 50s original touches, but it would push my budget out the window. I would live a cross plied, crash box'd original 7 in green, I just can't afford one.

G'day The engine I have in my Minor would be perfect for your project, injected 6 port 13B rotary, Mazda claimed 160hp at 7000 for them. Easy to drive with smooth progressive power off the line but with plenty of go to 7000+. The car they came out of had a weight about 1300kg so at maybe a third of that your machine would fly. Cheers Graham

overdrive. Thanks. I didn't do a build thread on it. I do have a few pictures of it at various stages. Its only in recent years that the LCB community has adopted build threads. They seemed to come in vogue once I sold mine....and internet use became cheaper Like yourself, I've been on there a few years (joined 2003.user name TPG, laughing pig avatar) Mine was a Chapman based build but I made it four inches wider.

To make it a bit more "spacious". The earlier 7's were/are well known for lack of space in the hips. Mine had Bedford Rascal/Suzuki Carry seats in which are narrow and it was still quite snug. I am no podger at 12st and it was snug. I also had a Cortina axle on the back as opposed to Escort to cover the extra.

Got the chassis properly planted on some stands last night. Once that was done, and i gave the garage a proper tidy, it was time for "that" pic.... I see what you men now Rich. Might think about widening it.....or a diet...
