Yeah, I doubt they'd get something thats a bad runner if the scene requires it to move rather than just stay still and explode, but expensive cars aren't that frequently written off when there's a cheaper alternative.
For example, in The Rock, when the Ferrari gets crushed, its a replica and in Gone in 60 Seconds the Mustangs aren't Shelby ones.
A MK1 Escort isn't so expensive that Hollywood can't afford to trash one or two, but they're in it for the money. If its cheaper to get a 1300GL and slap some fibreglass arches on it - bearing in mind they're probably going to have to spray them all to get them matching anyway it proably is - then that's what they'd do.

^ they didn't ^
James is absolutely right, they sourced a number of very tidy examples for the film because it's easier (and therefore cheaper) to make a tidy one look 'right' than it is a shonky one. This is not speculation either, I was told this direclty from the guy that was involved with prepping them for the film.
A number of them were imported from Europe and converted from LHD to RHD because tidy ones were more available at the time over there. Even this was more cost effective than spending time trying to find cheaper ones and tarting them up. Again, this is not speculation.
In a couple of weeks I hope to have a lot more first hand info and maybe, possibly even some behind the scenes photos. I was hoping to have had all this yesterday, but due to other things, this has been postponed for a few weeks.

That's a real shame then, I was expecting it to be genuine ones for the non-destruction scenes. Bit surprised they'd rather convert from LHD than put a kit onto a lower spec model to be honest, wouldn't have thought that would save much time or money.
