South yorkshire springs new uprated, taller coils ;D Be under a hundred quid for 4 springs any rate any length, including vat and delivery Some slightly longer Dampers - Again they wont be anything too difficult to source..... Actually I thing Nathan cut the spring pans off and rewelded them Higher for cheapness Its an overlander, keep it simple and mechanical....... A Hydraulic system failure and no suspension is just what you want in Mongolia Needs a Bullbar and lights as well for the full survival look ;D Think "Safari Rally" type Spec and accesories.... bars, Snorkel, mudflaps ;D oh and the customary Spare wheels on the roof or Bonnet ;D

I know this is an SL, but it might give a bit of inspiration... I think these rally SL's were auto's ( ). Even MB themselves must have admitted that they can't build a decent manual box ;D

If a Lada Niva's too unreliable for you,how about a 450 slc ? Built like a tank,similar fuel cosumption as a tank I ran one as an every day driver for 18 months,never let me down.

The Merc thing is pretty popular huh? I must say it would be tempting, diesel too, but I'd just worry about the repair side of things and fuel consumption. When it came to spares, I was thinking of carrying everything I'd need... ie you could carry a spare 2CV engine in the back, along with a couple of trailing arms and shocks. But a full compliment of Merc bits... Hmm. I did think about a bike too, a couple in France I know came back from Peking last year on mopeds, which formed part of my intrigue for the route. But I'd be carrying a laptop and digital camera... I'd rather not, but would kick myself if I didn't record it all along the way somehow. So better off in a motor. I wouldn't be adverse to a Lada Niva either. I'm going to work out a preliminary budget and timescale for this, because the more and more I think about it... Even if it's not this year, and to be honest I think this is going to need some planning. There's no reason why I shouldn't think about it seriously.

how about one of these? This is our old one that Mrs bxer loved. Make sure it's diseasel though, this beast would hit single figure mpg quite happiiy

Well, obviously I should say 2CV and given the choice, I'd have to do it in one myself.
But, rather than 505 which is a bit modern, get an old 504 estate. They still make the 504 in Kenya I think. Tougher than a bit tough box full of tough things. A diesel is incredibly simple and will keep slogging away for hours on end.
