I did a bit more paint stripping today on the wing ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131124_170308_zps745d7a73.jpg) I tried the sander, a paint scraper and a blade, all having similar effects on the body. It seems the paint is quite soft (nearly gooey) in places and it pulls of the thick filler/primer with it (Reliant applied a thick chalky filler/primer overt he gelcoat, apparently to hide all the imperfections) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131124_170328_zps6f4e7976.jpg) My biggest problem which is slowing everything down is I don't know how far to go. So, the question is - do I just strip it all back to the green gelcoat including the filler/primer? (I guess i will have to go to gelcoat in some places because there is some accident damage) I guess I should find out what a certain RSSOC sprayer does, as he'll most probably end up spraying it. So what do other people do when prepping GRP for paint?

Looking good mate ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) . What did you do with the gauges? was it just elbow grease or have you re-chromed them? Mine want doing in my 5a as they have been (brush) painted black so i don't know what the chrome is like underneath?? also the temp and fuel gauges are very dull as though the numbers have faded on the face of the gauge? I am currently considering changing the interior to black from brown Paul

Because decent paint strippers destroy GRP, sanders don't do anything to the Hammerite top layer and a blade can't cut through the original paint underneath, it took some thinking outside the box. I bought some caustic soda and mixed it with wallpaper paste. Caustic soda is known to strip paint quite well but it has no affect on GRP, so seemed ideal It turned the hammerite and primer to mush ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131128_161029_zps30b8e39a.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131128_164301_zpscbdf45fc.jpg) It did less to the celly, but it did soften it a bit, making it easier to scrape off with a blade. The gelcoat seems quite good in the places I've seen... ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131128_164352_zps8ac33d40.jpg) Apart from the front ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131128_164254_zps1a3aed41.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131128_164334_zps12183715.jpg) It's very obvious that the car has been in an accident, which I guess gives another reason to strip it ALL back to gel. I've left a stronger soda mix on this time to see what it does to the celly

Hot air gun and scraper works well. Needs a bit of practice but the result is good. Did my last Clan that way.

I tried the soda in a higher concentration, but it actually did less to the paint, so I've stopped using it - partly because its messy and partly because it turned all the paint brushes to mush ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131129_153247_zps5ea6f222.jpg) So I had another go with the heatgun and a blunt paint scraper and it works well now I have the hang of it. This is after about 2 hours work ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131203_162426_zps89af30a6.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131203_162354_zps48cfec14.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131203_164413_zps974ac2f8.jpg) I keep having to stop for long breaks though because the smoke and fumes are vile. It probably doesn't help that the body is in the corner of the garage, away from the door. I've also been ordering some more parts - I received a NOS clutch salve cylinder today and John Wade will call me tomorrow RE the camshaft. After that's ready, the engine can be put together ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

Cheers ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) When looking for a Scim, there isn't too much that can put you off - not much is expensive to fix apart from paint. Things to look for Rusty outriggers Rusty 'rear diaganols' (I have photos of mine on the first page) Rusty seatbelt mounts Cooling system needs to be in good condion if its a 6. The system is marginal at best Tired interiors - some parts are hard to get None of that is expensive or too difficult to sort, but it depends what money you want to pay. Tbh, if anything goes wrong, you can buy most parts cheaply and easily - you can buy used stainless tanks for £70 and you can buy an engine for £100 for example PAINT - if it's cracked or blistered, it will cost a fair amount to out right, so either buy one with good paint or learn to love the 'patina' My yellow one is covered in bubbles, but it's the original paint so I'm happy to keep it just like that. If you want to know any more or ask some questions, feel free to PM me - I'm rushing a bit ATM ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

We collected these today ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131208_130312_zps842434c8.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131208_151541_zpsdb70a7a7.jpg) Which should be a bit better than the originals ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131208_152137_zps27c718fd.jpg) The plan will be to strip them down, replace the worn foam and leather panels and dye the leather in a light cream colour then put back together with new speakers. I haven't seen how anyone else has fitted them in a coupe, but ideally, the floor needs to be lowered - my head wasn't far off the roof and I'm only 5'10 and there was no carpet or headlining. I'm not sure how I'll lower the floor though. Then back to stripping paint/filler down to the gel ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131208_144904_zps96c485d3.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131208_170757_zps34699002.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131208_170806_zps2d9292bb.jpg)

I recently ordered some genuine rebuild kits for the triple SU carb setup and it all cost an absolute arm and a leg. I received the rebuild kits on Friday and I'm very annoyed with SU. I ordered 1 of 1 kit and 2 of another, as advised on their website. It turns out that the type of kit I ordered 2 of actually contains enough bits for 2 carbs, so I wasted £100 on a kit I didn't need. Their website specifically stated the kit is enough for only one carb, not two They also charge a fee of over 25% of the value of the item when returned, so I've sent them a very angry email telling them to refund me in full and pay for the return postage as it is them at fault for mis leading me. Rant over ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

I spent some of yesterday afternoon cleaning and degreasing various bits. The gear selector mechanism. - I'm stunned Reliant went to that much effort to make it so beautifully and then design most other things on the car terribly. It uses 3 levers but has little springs and ball bearings to give the positive "clunk" feel and it has several grease ways cast into the main ally body. ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131208_161146_zps4793bff2.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131208_161221_zpsef7ed66a.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131208_161232_zps866c0827.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131214_140735_zpsus61hkal.jpg) So most of that is now degreased, some of it will be repairing and modifying but I'm generally quite happy with it. I managed to plate a few of the bits tonight (apologies for the curse word new camera phone) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131215_211142_zpsmws5z3h8.jpg) I also cleaned up all the pushrods, followers and the oil pump in prep for the engine build. ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131215_161351_zpsgcvpqimx.jpg) And just for a laugh, here's what one of the other oil pumps looked like inside ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131215_161420_zps0lquwi4x.jpg) More cleaning this evening and I got the linkage bars plated so they now look mighty shiny ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131216_215358_zps86crbwi3.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131216_215405_zpsvpcgsv3e.jpg) I've also spent a bit of time rebuilding the gauges ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20131216_224631_zpsaaoxowvm.jpg) I've left the pistons soaking in petrol overnight, so if the garage hasn't burnt down, I'll give them a good clean tomorrow ![(rofl)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/rofl.png)

I've now come frustrated and bored with the body on the Coupe so I'm moving back to working on the Flying Banana. The windscreen and seal need replacing so I took the old screen out today. The A post headlining needs replacing, so that was removed and new stuff will go in. I also filled in all the paint that'd cracked and chipped off. The engine bay is disgusting, so I'm pulling the engine out, so I can paint the engine bay and treat the engine to a gasket set and some paint. How it is currently ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Scimitar%205a/IMAG1275_zps111c33b0.jpg) I had a spare hour so I disconnected most of the things related to the engine so I can quickly pull it out when the engine stand is free

Bit of an update on the Coupe: More bodywork done. ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20140118_165033_zpsksxaomd2.jpg) Here's why I need a new rear corner ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20140112_155541_zpshbq4kpuk.jpg) I've Booked it in for paint for around June. After spending 5 months trying to source all the required engine parts, I managed to get the last of them last week, so I started building the engine ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20140116_165443_zpsuzqotcdc.jpg) ...till I got to the pistons. I have the wrong ones - So now I've got to spend more time and money finding some of them. Because I don't want this delaying plans with all the other cars, I put the sump on and got the engine in the chassis to store it. Looks pretty good 8) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20140119_161856_zpsfjiq2lda.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20140119_161901_zpsqpf1qrub.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Coupe%20S6/IMG_20140119_161909_zpsayjwknid.jpg) And I also managed to get a Tilton 74 series (like the one in BARF) for £25 ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) it's coming over from the USA so will take a few weeks, but at that price (which includes postage and taxes) I couldn't not. That's about it really. Most the time has been spent sourcing new parts that I can't fit yet, such as this brand new dizzy with electronic ignition that I got today ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) ![]()

Unsuprisingly, the most criticed bit on the GTE was it's engine bay, so I spent the last couple of weeks sorting it out. Before: ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Scimitar%205a/IMAG1275_zps111c33b0.jpg) During: ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Scimitar%205a/IMG_20140118_165011_zpsbg1oizxw.jpg) (It was all VERY oily - the engine wasn't actually painted - that's oil and dirt. Same with the overdrive.) The engine is the original though ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Scimitar%205a/315edc8319eaf7c817c2d6fbe174fd42_zps89c9c0ba.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Scimitar%205a/2044f7b7024c6180892222c17359c0c1_zps85b8df79.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Scimitar%205a/6007b276f5ee25df464e95b5b89f2e6e_zps5bac1782.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Scimitar%205a/03b650c39adeae2985d0a66522730e8a_zpsd525781c.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Scimitar%205a/33c3fdb3222e7ada0399ae4e405de5b8_zpsb6b8af80.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Scimitar%205a/f6aafb2ee4353cdb13e83579cac0d331_zps42682315.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Scimitar%205a/0d3f2139ff7c9b9ba259e5aca6040883_zpsdfa77560.jpg) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Scimitar%205a/665c089a463048b96d0300dd0364fee6_zpsab514714.jpg) And after (bar tiding a few things up like the clutch pipe and the wiring and painting and attaching the expansion tank - and bonnet before anyone says ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) ) The colour difference looks bad, but it's not noticeable in daylight. ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Scimitar%205a/0273a1ee969e37cc1a8159e453233aeb_zps70d2a601.jpg) After some starter wiring issues, the engine started and ran really nicely And the worlds shortest test drive For reference, a quick run down of the work done: All engine gaskets, bolts and seals replaced New rad and otter switch to solve some temperature/reading issues from a while ago Loom forward of the fusebox unwrapped, unused wires taken out and re wrapped in loom tape Radiator tray repaired Pretty much everything painted or zinc platedplated And the windscreen and seal are being replaced later this week as they are other let down areas of the car. I'm going to order the Coupe piston rings tomorrow now I have the funds ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

Thanks ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) We got the windscreen fitted today - it only took about an hour in the end and most of that was getting it started off. (These cars are notorious for windscreens being a pain to fit - this was mainly down to Reliant and the fact that they didn't make the hole in the body the same shape as the glass that fills it) I haven't put the filler bead in or used sealant yet as it all needed a good clean out from all the WD used. The glass also needs to settle into the rubber a bit. I also got the new A post material in, though both sides are a bit wrinkly at the bottom ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Scimitar%205a/65c5950e49ac71e18b3b44c3ff573ccd_zps8efee97c.jpg) We also got the car out and drove it for the first time and pretty much everything seems to work well (bar the temp and fuel gauges) We did get choked from the engine paint curing though ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) ![](http://i1195.photobucket.com/albums/aa386/sandyboyyyy/Scimitar%205a/2b6f8f9aa9fc45bacd36cd8abac6ab46_zps103ee141.jpg)
