Auto's are the best !
Easy to drive, once you've driven one you'll wonder what all the fuss was about. Much good advice given already. My auto cars owned mainly range from Hondas (always reliable) & Vauxhall Cavaliers (my main one was always reliable, smooth changes & good preformance & over 170k miles on it).
I did my test in a manual car but my first car was an auto then I went through a few manuals before getting another auto then recently got another manual but hating it (the car is good, manual box is a drag) so going back to auto again !

Cheers. Looks like it will be an auto even just to see. I used to have this weird idea that unless over 3 litres, it wasn't worth the "losses" of an auto.
I guess it is the oldie in me now wants me pasty hand free. I don't smoke anymore so it can't be that, although I still enjoy the occasional cigar. Might be quite cool, wafting along the motorway, "Combat"ised biggish 4x4 with the stereo playing Johnie Cash's version of Personal Jesus with a big fat cigar on. Sounds quite fun.

I suspect its to do with me getting 'mature', not only do i struggle like hell with new brands of phones etc, but i found auto too wierd, but then i'm pretty proactive with the old gearstick so it felt wierd in an auto. not too bad when ya get used to it specially on a run i guess. i'd have one if it was the right car, luxury thing or yank etc. not only driving a volvo takes some getting used to in the tight yorkshire hills, an auto adds to the experience!

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Thanks. I think it is weird, I always loved big cars, a lot of which are auto only, or auto by preference, yet every time someone suggested an auto I always said "No thanks I like to control the car".
But, now I'm thinking, well, all these people can't be wrong and I'm looking at bigger motors so I might give it a go. And "Clutch Knee" is always one of the things I hate when stuck on the motorway crawling along.

My T5 is Auto and when I was looking for it (or whatever it might have been) the auto box was one of the criteria...and one that I wouldn't be swayed on. For town use then you can't beat an auto, I used to hate them but trust me, after a while you wouldn't have anything else for your daily driver. For track days or hacking around country lanes a manual is going to be better, obviously - but for everything else, go auto and relax.

I guess it is the oldie in me now wants me pasty hand free. Which is the other point I was going to make...whenever I drive one of the manual cars in the fleet, I regularly curse the difficulty of eating and driving!

Spent 4 years driving 'round central london Auto was the natural choice. The Supra was an auto and the gallant I've got know is auto. Once you've driven one, you'll wonder why people make such a fuss about slush boxes not being "proper"

got to agree with most of whas been said so far, but id just like to add, remember autos have no engine braking, so downhill you just keep gathering momentum.
cant say ive had a prob braking with my left foot, saying that though ive had 10 years of practice driving forklifts with inching pedals, so my left foot skillZ are many. ;D

Autos in stop start traffic are brilliant, no more aching left ankle, just waft along.... I find them less flexable overall comapred to a manual. They have a habit of changing gear half way round a corner and at other moments when youd rather they didnt. Once you get used to them they are very good though. Fuel economy is worse than a manual, you cant tow them when they break down without removing the prop (unless its a very short distance) and as mentioned, if you get the discs hot then hold the car on the brake at a set of lights for example, the pads on the discs create a hot spot which can warp them.
One final thing thats worth a mention, make sure the autobox fluid is nice and bright red and isnt brown, emulsified or has a smell of rotten eggs. Autos have a nasty habit of suddenly losing all forward gears when they do go wrong, or sometimes they loose reverse. Real pain in the backside. A looked after autobox can last a very long time though, and in my experience an autobox is kinder to the engine as it "absorbs" much of the shocks and abuse that a manual box would normally transfer straight to the engine

On the subject of 'what car?' rather than 'what gearbox?', can I just say I find Delicas quite intriguing. I nearly bought one myself once. Shogun-van-tastic! ;D

Auto boxes are great in traffic/hills..... no more shaky left leg/stinky clutches as i had towing an Austin 1100 with my landy through 20 miles of nose to tail traffic on the M8 yesterday at rush hour should really fit a towbar to the merc

The somewhat tired auto in the merc has a slightly unnerving habbit of kicking down halfway round corners and roundabouts. Wakes me up in the morning.
Its also quite fun to drive occasionaly using the hold 2/3 shift to force a kickdown and this makes it work faster than waiting for the kickdown switch to work, probably needs adjusting in some way.
