At £3000 it might be tempting to buy a new car but I know that just because it's new it doesn't garuantee reliability or hassle free motoring so there's no way I'd pay more.
I recently noticed locally a less than two year old Nissan Primera 2.0 SVE for sale for £7000...that's £10,000 less than it cost new!! That's £5000 pounds a year in depreciation alone !! That would buy me about 20 old Bluebirds which I'd wager are just as reliable as a new Primera. You'd have to be insane or have much, much more money than sense to go buy a new car just for day to day transport.

I don't doubt that an older car is as (if not more) reliable than something built last week. The only real appeal of new stuff these days is "safety features" - and the manufacturers know it! It used to be the adage that "sex sells", now it's more a competition to see who can build the "safest" car, especially now there are these Ncap tests and "star" ratings. They suckered me in - when we bought our latest Astra, I wanted one with airbags / abs etc. to keep my "precious cargo" safe. The unfortunate downside of all this stuff is that as cars get quiter and "safer", it gives the unskilled driver a greater feeling of indestructablity (which is not true and frankly terrifying). My personal opinion is that any car is safe as long as the driver knows its and their own limits and stays well within them. That's why you'll find me in the "slow" lane at 55 when it's curse word down torrential outside, giving everything a wide birth. Especially as the outside lane is still nose to tail with "safe" Fucus's doing 90+ despite the fact they can'y see where they're going.... Sorry to wander from topic a bit... just needed to get that off my chest... and breathe...and r e l a x...

I agree with all of that last post!
I didn't say I was tempted by the new Dacia to give up second hand retro bargains, but think about this. How many people are running about in knackered ten year old Novas or Fiestas (nothing against either car, I'm just saying that at a low price they're often neglected) through neccesity that'll never pass another MOT, have never had a service in all their life, and are about an inch from collapsing, probably on the motorway due to a suspension or wheelbearing failure or something or a blowout of the bald stiff tyres, and killing the people inside, they'd benefit in a few years from secondhand, nearly new, very tidy and good condition Logans going for nearly no money at all, or even buying a brand new one, so more people would have the right to a decent motor if they couldn't afford to shell out 5k on a used Polo or something.

I meant the new Logan, although I'm impressed that that guy managed to get all those sacks on there, anyone with sanity would have just hired a haulage contaractor with a hiab unit for that!

Re. Revo's comments about the second-hand appeal of the Logan: couldn't agree more! I'm of the understanding that a few years ago in Ireland the government offered an incentive to take old cars off the road....the result: people buying new cars they can't really afford (to maintain). When I was in Wexford a couple of months ago I was shocked by the number of really poorly maintained 6-year-old Fiesta's etc. chugging about - yet I didn't see a single "retro" car in the whole 10 days I was there!

I worked in a Ford dealership when that scheme was introduced, the amount of Mk2 escorts, mk 1 fiestas that came in and were crushed was criminal. The lack of old cars in Ireland is due to the fact that until 2000 there was no car test here and cars got driven into the ground.

That Logan thing costs about 5000 quid here in romania. It's still too expensive for most folk here (The average wage in Bucharest is 150-200euro/month!!!). But it is a modern, safe, fairly simple, light weight machine and all the car most people need. Bring it on I say, i bet it would go down a treat in western Europe. A cheap, interesting modern antidote to all these fat lardy VW clones.
The old Reno 12 went out of production 18 months ago although you can get it in truck format still. you can also buy a thing called a Dacia Solenza, this is a renault 19-based hatch which again is quite modern looking, for about 4000 quid.
