A true mould breaker in it's day - streamlined shell, all round torsion bar suspension, genuine six seater car, water cooled 1500 cc boxer engine, twin carbs, the first ever production car with a curved windscreen and to CROWN it all 'Built in Bradford' A little over 23,000 were built and there are probably less than 300 about today. This is an early car originally exported to New Zealand but purchased by fellow Jowett owner Peter Pfister and shipped to his homeland of Switzerland a couple of years ago. Peter drove the car over to the UK in the middle of last year for the one of the club gatherings then left it with us for a restro - nothing too radical but upgrades to the suspension / brakes as required - engine & box rebuild - bare shell / bare metal paint (read US period style two tone paint job) and quite a lot more. Now the car has good history and looks quite good in the image - passed a strict NZ WOF in 2010 & a stricter Swiss MOT in 2011 but the question is this ' Is all that glitters 'GOLD' ? or is it somthing brown and smelly thats been rolled in glitter ?' I shall let you form your own opinion as the restro is progressed I have the help & hindrence from a few Jowett owning mates along with usual mad rush of a day job and an impending house move in the mix so its likely to take several months but's lets see how we get on

Awesome, I love Jowett's my mate used to have a few of them. They're lovely to drive feel a lot newer than they are. I did a bit of work wiring a Sat nav charger into a positive earth Jupiter in my last job, beautiful cars.

Engine and box out was first on the list - along with the seats trim / front & rear bumpers etc Front & rear brackets were fabricated for the chassis tilter so that we could get the car off the ground and see what we let ouselves in for The original plan was to take the car back to a rolling shell for the restoration - but once I had viewed several suspect areas - all with difficult access to undertake the repairs - we took the decision to to strip the shell - so a comprehensive strip down commenced Detailed images were taken of everything - before & after removal - the main floor is like so many cars of the era and fabricated from plywood - as is the boot floor

Lots of nice touches were fitted to this model - art deco style dash & switch gear On the other hand very complex master cylinder arrangement with front brakes hydraulic - and the rears hydraulic over mechanical with the handbrake engaging with the master cylinder setup in order to apply the rear brakes A couple of weekends later and we had a bare shell And just one of the piles of bits after the first wash off

I wonder what it would take to resto-mod one of these bad boys with a Subaru 1.8 or 2.2.....food for thought.

Solid but needs some work. He did fleabay it a while back but with no luck. If anyone wants details & a number PM me. Its near Bournemouth on the south coast.

Nice. Always been interested in these since I read about them as a kid.
I swear I have even seen a few in Melbourne and that I saw one on the weekend, but surely they'd be too rare to make it to Australia.

Guys - Thanks for the interest just to answer a few points raised -
There was conversion a good time ago that utilised a Subaru engine & box - don't know that much about though and I cannot admit to seeing it in the flesh - but we have a plan at some stage in the future to re-engineer a Javelin - so all modern running gear but with the classic style of the car - however, we have several other projects that are in the pipeline first.
There is also a conversion about in the UK that is 5+ litres Dodge V8 engined - I think with shortened volvo rear axle & diff - it's changed hands a couple of times thro' e bay in the last 24 months.
You are a well informed bunch - yes the bodies were put together on a line that rotated the bodyshells for assembly - In fact the bodies were fabricated by Briggs Motor Bodies at Doncaster and were delivered to Jowett in Bradford painted & trimmed ready for the mechanical assembly
More on the resto front soon

So all the bits off here's the obvious bad & ugly This is just above the battery tray that is situated under the rear seat of the car - not that visible in the image but a pop riveted plate covered in underseal - it's not original so off it came In turn hiding a skim of filler which when tapped - becomes a large hole Looks like the same bodger repaired the offside center jacking point with the same filler & underseal technique

Ugly welding around nearside rear outrigger Which when tapped turns out to made of soft copper looks like the local plumber did car repairs on the side Split in front chassis leg

The ugly welding theme continues - this is the nearside lower suspension mounting I dread to think what they have plated over - it will be coming off at some stage This is the offside rear shocker mount - all but hanging on And the nearside fairs no better

Other areas do not get away lightly either - rats nest of a wiring harness (new one on order) Cracked front bulkhead cross member (critical as the upper suspension mounts through this) There are many other areas of bodge that we shall work our way through as the restoration progresses - well that's the easy bit done (well any idiot can pull bits off a car) - Now the hard bit starts with the sorting of the shell / panels / mechanical & paint
