There's this celica near to me, (Birmingham) that's been sitting outside on a drive for 10ish years that I know to, and today I managed to get a picture of it. It looks like a conversion to me, but I can't find any pics/info of anything like it on the 'net at all, and would seriously like someone on here to tell me more! Thanks in advance, minds of RR ;D

*Does squinty eye thingy with finger held up between face and screen with one eye closed*
Yep, that looks great with the roof down. More info needed - potential "A-road on a summers day" material right there.

I can't remember there was a factory convertible available of this gen of Celica. It could be that it was offered through the dealers, but probably still a custom job. Looking at the way the top sits at the back, i'd say it is custom. Don't know about the UK, but i know that in the 70s and 80s in Germany a LOT of companies where offering custom convertible conversions on loads of cars. I've seen some of them, most are ok, some are hideous! This one looks ok with the roof up, but the bulky thing sitting on the back when it's down spoils the whole line for me, sadly

Looks like it was a factory model I disagree. As has been said convertible conversions were booming business at one stage. This doesn't look to be a particularly good one...the successful parts being the ones the Celica was endowed with by Toyota. In fact, it looks very similar to a convertible Fiat 131 I owned in execution.

This is what they did in Germany at the time: Voll Cabrio: Or this later gen Celica made by Schwan (i had one which looked the same, but was made by Voll) Or an Ascona, made by Hammond & Thiede:

That's a shame, bet its rotten as a pear underneath. Got to be worth a an ask though needs to be saved.
I agree about the convertible roof, looks awful. Would be cool roadsterised with that god awful roll hoop removed.

Ahh, I was speculating about it being from the factory as I'd found some pictures of similar ones living in the states with identical bars etc - perhaps it was the same company that supplied them.
As for looks, I like it. The hoop might not be for everyone but it reminds me of a triumph stag in a way.

I don't know of any factory or aftermarket convertible 1st Generation Celicas. One of the problems with all but the earliest cars was the tank behind the rear seats, which meant nowhere to hide the hood when it was down. All the known examples, including the car in the OP are DIY - some work well, others less so.... LNG did look a little rough when it appeared on eBay in 2006 - Whilst this, (apologies for the image, it's the only one I could find, courtesy of Celi-News 1995) was quite good -

This was originally parked up due to the carb it sat for close to a decade and is now safely in storage and set to be fully restored by me (new owner) in the very near future. This is a conversion it was not standard from the factory the roof was brand new when it was parked up however some kind person slashed a hole in it and now I need a new interior, I know the guy who made the roof he has a shop in Aston if anyone needs his services let me know he is very good at what he does. The bonnet is the only part of the car that is not fixable die to heavy corrosion on the hinges apart from that the car solid thankfully when I start work on it I will post images any info about this car can be given just ask me.

Honestly the pictures do this car absolute no justice the soft top looks awkward and ugly on picture however in person it don't look too bad I will be changing it tho I'm not that big of a fan and it does not lock fully its only held on my buttons at the rear that anyone can just pop off. This car was owned by my dad and he passed it down to me as I'm the only person who cares about it and I has the skills to make it good again. Red was not the factory colour I believe that it was brown at some point it's only done 70k in 43±yrs that's quite good considering there are cars 3 years old with over 100k if anyone has any parts please let me know. I stumbled across this chat while looking for parts and k was quite surprised to see peoples interest in the car.

a very worthwhile save but maybe not the prettiest of conversions. got to be a rare beast though. will certainly be keeping an eye on this one for progress.

Much to some people's disappointment the hoop will be staying also the soft top can be removed completely within a matter of minutes however I'm not a fan of the look of this specific one I will change it after the respray but in person it don't look nearly as bad as on the pictures. I will be starting a thread as soon as I start work on it I'm also on drive tribe so I will be posting progress of this car and my other cars too. I have massive plans for this car and it will be getting lots of upgrades. I'm happy to answer any questions

I have an update on the roof situation I will be relocating the fuel tank at some point in the future because visibility isn't the best, this will allow me to have a a place to fold the roof down in too I've been researching it and I have seen some nice examples however it is quite a job so it's going to be at the bottom of my list, if anyone knows someone who can do a unleaded fuel conversion in the Midlands area please get in contact.
