An old Top Gear popped up after watching something or other on youtube. Can't help myself nowadays. Crikey, how dull was the editing back then. Thursday nights after Top of the flops back then though, it was must see viewing. I thought you all might to see how much a litre of unleaded cost us back in 1991. I think I was in a Mk1 Astra SRi at the time and moaning every time there was a price hike. Here you go, don't say you haven't been warned.

Holy curse word I passed my test in '87 and I could tank up my old Victor for about the same price as a box of fags nowadays Makes me feel old, Always remember my old dad grumbling every year when the gov chucked a penny on a gallon (this was once a year!) Now it goes up and down daily - mostly up Thinking back I was 21 in 91 Christ, I'm going to have a cry

I remember 36p a gallon. It went to 54p in a year and there were practically riots in the street - rationing coupons issued, the lot. 73/74?

I used to run a v6 on 110 pounds a month in fuel and that included work 5days a week 12 miles each way general running to shopsand mates house plus a monthly round trip of 100. Miles. I now have a 2.0 only work 13 days a month 12 miles each way and the 100 mile round trip and i struggle to do any running about on the same petrol budget.

When I started driving (1990) I could run my Beetle for a month on £40 and I was driving 30+ miles a day to work and back. Now I do £40 in a weekend just ferrying my kids about!

Things were much cheaper 22 years ago shocker!
A house that is worth £163,000 in 2012 was worth £55,000 in 1991, and you could buy the equivilant base model Sierra for under £10k, where the same spec Mondeo today is £18k.

This is true aint stopping me from a retro action man throwing out the cot session mind I could go off on a tangent but this isnt the site for doing so. 'll shut up now and say Ventoras need to be found because I need one more than a blood supply right now Get it every now and then - one on ebay but its drag stripped, and I want a 3.3 standard
I'm warbling now so I will go to bed (work nights)

Petrol had gone up 40% in two years, it's not a linear increase.

Thanks for pointing that out vip. Not that this was my point but take a look at the percentage increases before laying on the sarcasm.

You might as well compare the cost of fuel in the 1950s. It is much worse when you compare fuel prices over the last 5 years, when the comparative prices of other commodities have seen much slower increases.

There was no comparison.
Simply an observation. A reminder for my age group of what we used to pay when/not long after we passed our tests. A wry look. Something to point out to RR's who were born then.
I'd hazard a guess most people watching the piece would at least raise an eyebrow when they saw the price.
I think we can all appreciate there's something called inflation and progressive governments fleecing us with more fuel tax.
For fear of this descending into some playground spat as witnessed too often on football related forums, I'll check out now. Cheerio
