A coil spring is simply a straight bar wound into a helix. Unwind it, fix one end, and place a weight on the other. The bar will deflect a certain distance. Now shorten the bar [same as cutting a coil] and place the same weight on the end of the bar. The deflection will be a smaller distance. It's all about leverage. If you half the length of the bar, the same weight will deflect the bar half the distance. This analogy is pretty good, except the spring wire actually acts in torsion when the coil is compressed. By removing coils, you are shortening the bar which increases the torsional stiffness proportionally. The other issue raised is a stress limit one, but the answer to this is simple: if your spring breaks, replace it I *think* i just out-pedanted Dan, in which case HA!

Yeah, originally I was going to write it as 'a torsion bar formed in the shape of a helix', but I thought it would over complicate explain about hanging the same weight off the end of different length bars and the effect on the deflection.

Your shocks remain the same. No need to change them. How can you possibly know, he hasn't even chopped them yet! How do you know how short/long they are post-choppage? Shocks are fitted to a car to fit on both minimum and maximum travel of the axle or wishbone. If you take the spring out n throw it away. The shock would still not be fully compressed.

What are you on? Most suspension arrangements include the bump stop in the shock. And even if they don't there's no point having mroe travel on the shock than the rest of the suspension - so manufacturers won't do it.

If I take the coils out of my front struts and lower the car back onto the floor, the top of the strut body would be touching the underside of the strut top mount and I'd have metal to metal contact with no suspension. If that isn't a definition of 'fully compressed' then I don't know what is.

I see your point. I hadnt considered struts. I have a 50s car with coils n leaf springs. Iv bagged it n it sits on the bump stops. It still uses standard length shocks. It of course couldnt work with struts.

If you read my last post in my build thread I thought out load as you do about options on my rear springs on my mk1 neon which is sitting higher at the rear because it is not on the correct springs. The correct springs are notoriously inadequate, so to stop the car bottoming out I fitted mk2 springs which but the rear in the air. here is a direct quote from my build thread and then the reaction I got on practicallyclassics.phpbbhosts.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=138&view=unread#unreadPlease remember these aren't mk1 neon springs, which is why they are too big! These are off a mk2 r/t neon As I am in pain and not withit after doing what I have done today I wrote the ideas and thought into my threads so I can remember what the options were available when I 'm compos mentis! Please take it and goe throught it or whatever
