I just done a 400 mile round trip in my BMW E36 323i touring.
On the way the weather was so bad the speed limits on the M4 were down to 40 every so often but even when they weren't 50 was the fastest safe speed I could manage. On that trip my 2.5l BMW managed an average of nearly 40mpg, that average included the twisty hilly roads and town driving at the both ends, on the motorway the fuel consumption gauge never dipped below 50mpg. It just goes to show what a difference going that bit slower does to your fuel economy.
The trip back was done at the speed limit and she returned 34.9mpg still fairly respectable given the engine but nowhere near as good as the going slowly trip down. The interesting bit though was the motorway mpg barely changed most of the way the needle pointed at 50mpg with it dropping down to 30mpg for every hill. On the twisty roads around home going on average 10mph faster caused a 15mpg drop in fuel economy.
It just goes to show carefull driving the majority of the time will leave you the cash to put the fuel in when you want to have fun.
Oh id also like to mentioned that this trip was in convoy with a 2012 renault scenic 1.5 diesel that returned 46mpg on the way and 41mpg on the way back so I'm going to stick with my big petrol engine as its sounds nicer and doesn't cost all that much more to run if I drive it carefully

They're not as bad as people think
I had a Volvo S80 with the 2.4 5cyl engine. 40mpg easy actually pretty easy to get, got a 45mph once going to the beach party with 3 people in the car in convoy with a slower vehicle and i'm sure it was capable of more as that was taken over 115 miles, the first 30 were driven in anger to Brian Damaged house as i was late! lol

Bang on, driving style affects fuel consumption far more than the fuel in the tank.

Yup, I struggle to get decent mpg out of anything as I tend to give cars a lot of stick everywhere.

I can squeeze 40mpg out of my 3.2 jag on the motorway which I think is pretty impressive. the second I get off the motorway that average soon plummets unfortunately.

I done a 150 mile round trip in my 728i on ÂŁ30. Normally ÂŁ20 does 55 miles, think the big motors prefer long distance

I used to get 50mpg out of a Saab 900 cabrio sitting at 55mph the same as my 1.25 fiesta zetec auto weighing a lot less

This is depressing. My M30 powered 530i does 30 mpg at best if driven sloly on the motorway. Normal average is 24-27 mpg - terrible.

I used to get around 7mpg round town from my Blazer. I expect that to decrease massively when I fit the 8" lift and 38.5" tyres.
Totally worth it though.

Well, my 3l straight six (25 years old!) can return 30MPG - I think that's quite impressive, given it's bolted to a slush-box... But most times I'm closer to 23MPG - that's the 'have fun' bit ;D
But whatever... I didn't buy this car to save fuel, but to have fun. And when I convert to 3l straight six turbo-diesel, I hope I can get a bit of both. Fun & a slightly lower fuel bill. But I still expect a maximum of 35MPG ;D With cheaper stuff, though...

We managed 22 MPG out my 4.6 Range Rover on its steady 70mph journey home from Southampton when I bought it..... Couldn't believe it at the time...... and still can't, as it does 10-11MPG daily now, lol.

I get 18mpg on the daily commute to work, about 24 at a steady pace.
Doing 80mph from J14 to J26 on the M1 only got me 16mpg though (3L Petrol running on LPG)
Mazda returns high 20s, never had it for a particularly long run yet!

Lol, if I commute in my FD I feel I've done well if it returns double-figure MPG I try to look on it like the fuel will have all run out in ten years or whatever but at least I'll have enjoyed in while it lasted. Mind you, plod along the motorway at a constant speed and keep it off the turbo and it'll give high twenties, it's town work or heavy traffic that knackers it. Sorta misses the point a bit though, why would God have put all those traffic lights in if not to encourage the Traffic Light Grand Prix? ;D

You have to look at it differently: we all burn huge quantities (titties, lol ;D) of fossile fuel. And this is a VERY good thing for the environment!
Because: the more we burn, the quicker it's gone and alternatives have to be used. So - driving cars that give only a few miles to the gallon is the best thing for mother nature you can do! ;D
Simple logic! ;D

To be fair, you can have both, my 530d BMW tourer goes like a rocket and almost never gets driven in a restrained manner, the difference between caning it and driving it like an old woman is only about 5mpg, it went to Scotland and back this year, whole trip including 1000 miles of very high speed motorway and a week driving round little lanes averaged about 43mpg caning it round the doors i get about 35 driving it like a granny i get about 38... So i may as well have fun!

driving style have a big difference in my escort if I drive it really carefully I can get as much as 8mpg out of it apposed to it normally getting 2-4mpg with average driving that said I can get an average of 52mpg if I put it on a trailer and pull it with my TDI bora

I really want a 750i or an 850i to get a taste for proper fuel comsumption. A 530d is not bad choice of car. Shame it's a white good E39. I had one of those for 3 weeks before the engine cooked itself on gas mark 9.
