Blimey is it nearly the end of January ?!?!? in the last couple of months we've moved house, realised we're going to have a baby and managed to get thought christmas on a shoestring..Result! Anyways - we had been thinking of changing my '91 35i passat sallon for something with power steering as the preggo missus cant drive it...but I've missed out on some later passats with PAS on ebay so we thought "better the devil we know", we'll stick with the one we have and see what happens. And...I'm allowed to tinker with it as I also sold my 309gti track car to help fund the move!!!! shes a good lass my missus I know I spoke about all this before but you know how it goes. life gets in the way sometimes. No major plans just lower and wider with some wheels and maybe some paint as its got a few annoying scratches etc.. first question...where can I get 4x100 to 4x108 hub adaptors that don't cost an arm and a leg? also..longer wheel bolts...where from?? cheers all..will keep you posted.

I presume you could retro-fit a power steering set-up from a suitable donor Passat.
If you do, don't bother with nice wheels because you know what happens to nice wheels rims when certain people drive your car.

re the rims...very true.... I investigated the retro fit PAS but i seem to recall its more laborious than you would think.
I'm just gettign a cheap set of audi rims..I'm gonna need 4x100 to 4 x 108 adaptors and 20mm longer bolts though.
wehre can i get those from ?

That looks lovely. Has just struck me how unusual it is to see a Passat of that vintage in such fresh-looking condition. Quite a few estates in my village all with plenty of battle scars!
I love white lenses but in this case, orange rules.

These guys sorted me out with nuts for my Cressida so Passat nuts shouldn't be a problem. They are a nice friendly bunch too, and were even interested in what i was up to. They probably do spacers too. www.speedshack.co.uk/

we have an L reg 1.8i passat estate, best bloody car i've owned, and ive had 100s, 190k and still as sweet to drive,no rust,so reliable,no surprises!-- just look at the newer ones prices compared to your equivalant ford focus, volvo etc, over-engineered/built to last, wish I could afford a newer model, but I'm determined to get a quarter of a million miles in her!

I ideally want an estate but mines going so well there is no real reason to sell it apart from the added practicality. and the boot is still huge anyway! I keep my eyes on ebay an dam looking at a vento at the moment but not too fussed if I miss it.
e-dizzle - how much are the porsche adpators ??
I was goign to try the cheapy lowering kits (shocks an dspring) on ebay (the german ones that owrk out at about £200 all in) think its worth a try?
60/40 or 70/50 lowering?

Passats are fantastic cars - I've not had a B4 shape or earlier myself, but they've always been on my shortlist when looking for reliable daily drivers.
I've had a B5 and currently have a B6, and will more than likely have the B6 facelift when it's time to change it.

the 35i is defo retro. it might not be a 70's pile of essex scrap metal with vinyl as far as the eye can see. or a rare little japanese motor. loads of chrome a fantastical revolutionary design or is particularly rare. it might not be quirky, fast or even particularly distintive/attractive - However this is a 16 year old car..19 if id bought one of the early 35i's. it is a very well built, solid car that is practical, comfortable (find another car iwth this much rear leg room for this kind of money..it huge! the 35is has got a personality though, maybe its that front end more so than the facelifted '95 version. and being a VAG there so many things that can be done, transplants of engines, wheels, interiors - the usual. I don't have the funds to do most of these but the good thing is i don't need to. I think its a great practical retro car

It sounds strange, but it appears somehow that VWs make it into Retro-dom faster than other marques. The Golf made it well before the Fiesta. Another thing is, the VW modifiers tend to get on a retro vibe when the do 'em. If it gets bonnet vents, LED washers and a great big spoiler then it won't be retro - if it's slammed over some 15" (or less!) rims then it stays. ;D

Nice Passat man, looks to be in great shape! Those FK 60/40 suspension kits are reckoned to be very good. I nearly got one before I decided it had to be coilovers for proper slammage. If you want more info check out VWVortex.com, loads of those guys run these kits. They are good cars these. Very solid and reliable. In fact my '91 Passat makes my '97 Accord look shoddy by comparison. And yeah the rear leg room is vast! It only takes a few simple mods to make them look quite cool in an unusual kinda way. Not the kind of car you see modded that often.

Its all relative ot the owners age too. I'm 28, thi sis the sor tof car that reminds me of days gone by, family holidays, the sort of car my dad would have bought when i was a nipper! thats retro - its those things that spark off good feelings in your head about good times in your life. thats my opinion anyway.
