I have been planning for a trike project for a while now, it has now begun!! Collected the bike a while back and it really nice! Fair condition for its age, and rides really well from what my mate was saying. I was having a bit of a play around doing short runs pulling away on my mate's forecourt and it's very nice, will make a great trike.
My trike has the very unimposing name of Sid, after Sid the sloth from Ice Age (you'll see why in a bit!)
It is a 1994 Yamaha Diversion XJ900, or at least it was, till I got my grubby hands on it, and started tearing it apart for bigger and better things I am doing a bolt on conversion, having purchased a conversion kit from a company up north. It is taking a while to get the kit back, but I would rather have not risked building it myself as I have never attempted something like this before, and as it'll be my daily commuter, and will be doing a fair run on the motorways each day, I figured I'd rather pay for one from someone who's done it before, than attempt at making my own.
Day I got it:
Why it's called Sid - see the resemblance?
So the work commences!
That's as far as I can go whilst waiting for the kit to come back. Hopefully tomorrow as it was meant to be today!
Suitable work supplies!!
Arches with marker lights
I got bored, so I decided to make it more my style. Yes, those "headlamp mount brackets" are out of an Ikea wardrobe!!
The final plans:
14" steel wheels on mud terrain tyres with white walls, and an A frame on the rear with a winch, reminiscent of the old wrecker tow trucks from the 50's.
Should be fun as it all comes together!!
Frame arrived the other morning, and spent the day with a mate down the garage welding it up, grinding it smooth and getting it all ready. Just got to paint it now, and then it's all ready to bolt on
Well I've now got the frame all painted up, and completely refitted it all to the bike part now. All fits spot on, only bit that will require some reworking is the exhaust as it's currently pointing right at the frame, but I'll look at that when I have the axle on there and it's all under load.
All I need now is the axle, and then the rest of the kit.
I had this little curse word delivered today
One Reliant Rialto axle has arrived! And of course, it didn't take me long to start playing. And, after a bit of playing, a couple of bottles of beer and a few cigarettes, this was the final result!
I've had to park it outside tonight as I have heating engineers coming round tomorrow and they need to get in the garage, so the axle arrived just in time for that!
Some daylight photos of it today
And did some work on it again today as well, cut the exhaust system down a bit so the end can would fit on there. Was intending for it to go under the frame, but I would need to bend the system, or add a mandrel into the system, options I don't have in the garage at home
