It's taken 74 years to 'progress' from the car on the right, to the car on the left. Well if by 'progress' you mean the new Beetle it's faster, more economical, better handling, better roadholding, is more comfortable over distance, emits less pollution from it's engine then well, that's some 'progress'. It's only crime is that it's maker attempts to emulate an earlier design that is iconic and well-loved, and we wouldn't be talking about that if VW had created a successor in the 70's to sit alongside the Golf and had updated it to match. 'Progress' indeed. And for the record, I don't dislike the new one. And that comes from someone who loathes it's immediate predecessor.

I've mellowed in my opinion to modern remakes/reimaginings/progressions of classic designs and indeed to many modern cars. I'm seeing things I like in a car that I never thought I would, even the Nissan Juke looks pretty cool in an insectile kind of a way at night with all the lights turned on up front... but I digress. The Beetle has had many different guises, and the modern guise is just as relevant as the original to the people that buy it and that's why it will continue to be successful. It might not be a car (in any of its guises) I can ever see myself owning, even though the charming air cooled number has a spot in my affections but you have to admit they can look pretty interesting. Actually, I tell a lie, there is one Beetle I'd like to have in my life...

What I do mean is that I find it intriguing that a massive manufacturer like VAG would still look to a 74 year old design to draw inspiration for their latest car model. Obviously the psychology behind this is they assume buyers will be attracted to the design and buy lots of them, ultimately continuing the good fortune of the marque. Yes I know there is a 'new' mini; yes I know there is a 'new' fiat 500. None of them are direct descendants of a design which is three quarters of a century old. The original designers (probably with no thanks from the fuhrer ) must have got something very, very right.

I prefer the old new beetle too, I dislike the RS beetle, wheels are too big and I dislike the style of them. I'd honestly own any of the beetle shapes. I can certainly see the new old steelies becoming popular amongst the vAg folk

I wasnt a huge fan of the last beetle ...... neither were VAG apparently...noticed in the recent TV ads how they bypassed the Old New Beetle straight to the latest one from the Grandaddy?

The 'new' Beetle and the 'new' not to be called 'new new' Beetle is a Golf! So why do people try and compare it to a Type 1? The last proper beetle was built in 1967. I'd like a Hebmuller too.

I'm the same. I have to say though, I prefer the old New Beetle to the New New Beetle. Snap, the new new beetles roofline looks squished, too flat It's the roofline that I like on the new-new beetle! The old one looked too upright and was IMO far too tall. The new-new almost has a fastback look to it. Well if by 'progress' you mean the new Beetle it's faster, etc etc etc No I don't mean that. What I do mean is that I find it intriguing that a massive manufacturer like VAG would still look to a 74 year old design to draw inspiration for their latest car model. The original designers (probably with no thanks from the fuhrer ) must have got something very, very right. I read, maybe in Autocar, that the Beetle is a VAG "halo" model, like the Golf GTi, so will probably be around forever. The same article concluded there's no reason to buy one over the Golf except for the look of it - probably sums it up.

I'm going to bump this thread as ive just bought a Black (old) new beetle. Get some photos up! I drove a friend's 65 Bug the other day - first time I'd driven one in over 15 years (since selling my old '67), with the view to possibly buying it. All I can say is that my Mk2 Golf felt about 900 years newer and more refined. Disappointed was an understatement. I'd imagine the new old Beetle would feel massively newer to drive than my mk2! In the meantime, I reckon this is the true successor to the original Beetle - cheap to run, budget priced, fun to drive and no obesity issues. I quite fancy owning one.

I don't pick it up until Saturday - it's a old new beetle, being a 2001 Y plate. I agree about the Up, one of the most interesting car's to be made by VW in a while that doesnt have a GTi/R badge.
