Check the small wire is on the starter solenoid and that the connections are tight and clean. If they are fine, check the small wire has a 12v supply when the key is turned to the crank position.

Does the solenoid on the starter engage?
I've had a new starter fail on me, does she start with a bump?

On the newer batteries you're not supposed to let the voltage drop below a certain level (can't remember what type) otherwise the cells begin to die.
Using a jump start box on my t4 just made it click, I had to start my passat and allow it to stabilise and then crank.
Deffo check the connections on both the battery and starter. Next, whip out the multimeter and see if your getting voltage to the terminal on the starter. I've been known to "bridge" a screw driver over the connections (now have a snap on "starter") of the starter motor.
