Total randomness has brought me to typing this! After an intersting conversation with the wife about future cars we want to own (she wants a Merc CLS, not retro but still totally cool!), I've decided I have an urge to buy a Jaguar in the next year. Ive had old BMW's (Boy do I miss my E28 like crazy!), various VW golf gti's, a few J cars and plenty of old Fords. So now is the time in my life of at 26 I shall buy a Jag. Why do I want one? I suppose my Dad is to blame for starters, he used to tell me the storys of some that he had owned in his life, as he described them to me he felt that they were some sort of way to show you have taste and style in luxury cars. As I turned 15 he bought a 1990 2.9 XJ6. This car for me was awsome, I loved how it's low sleek lines made it look bigger than it was and the old school clocks with digital gauges (That worked!). I remember going out with him one day in it, the ride was alien-like to me, comfort and silentness combined with a lovely straight 6 soundtrack that could only be heard when pushed. 10 years on and a friend at work also had that 'urge' to buy a Jag, he ended up with a black 1995 XJR. I was a passenger in what can only be described as a beast! Averaging 13 mpg with his driving, this car wasnt standard and would rip your neck out in seconds! But he loved it's charm and certain presance that Jags naturaly have. So what shall I go for? I want a retro XJ6 of some sort. Looking to spend £3k max, otherwise I can throw another £2k and get myself a 2004 XJ6! Although its not a daily MPG cant be as low as 13 mpg, 25+ is acceptable to me. The 4.0 seems to be the best engine, more power than a 3.2 but not much worse on fuel. What shall I look out for model wise? Mike.

I know the feeling, had a xj40 a few years ago, 3.6, and loved it, and ever since then every 6 months or so, the Jag bug kicks in, and off on Evilbay I go looking, for 3 grand you have a pretty much open market on retro Jags, I too would punt for the 4 litre, Never been in a XJR but hell would love to have one just to say Ive had one Most of what Ive seen for sale around that mark have good mechanics, I fear the only thing what lets them down is the old tinworm, they are a fair bit prone. But there are some crackers out there. Myself, if its just going to be a weekend ride, go for the biggest and best!! XJR thunder rocket!!

I keep getting an urge to sell the P6b and buy an XJS. Am I a bad person? It happens every winter.

Funny you should say that. Yesterday I found myself sitting in my van staring at a XJ Sport in the local shopping carpark whilst the wife was shopping. Lovely looking car EVERYBODY that walked past stared at it as well. One day one day Ill own a jag.

XJ40's and X300's are brilliant value for money and are far more reliable and easier to live with than earlier XJ's while still feeling very traditional.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

I scratched my jaaaaaaaaaaaaaag itch a couple of years ago. Took the plunge and bought a late XJ40 3.2 Sport. Very nice car, comfortable and looked the bizz, but I sold it after only 4 months. It never quite felt like 'my' car if you know what I mean
Went back to my Mercedes' after that

XJR on LPG with budget and LPG would ease running costs of sub 20 mpg.

It never quite felt like 'my' car if you know what I mean Went back to my Mercedes' after that Something similar happened to me. I had a 1976, P reg, 3.4 SII XJ6 for 12 years but had to sell when running costs were getting too high for me to afford after taking early retirement so replaced it with a 240 Volvo. Roll on another couple of years and I got the urge again so had a 2.9 XJ40. Not a patch on my previous SII XJ6 therefore sold it after a few weeks and carried on using the Volvo. Still fancy another but this time would go for the current shape alloy bodied X350 rather than a XJ40 or X300. Mate has a S type diesel he bought new and rates that highly. Paul H

I had a 3.0 S-type SE the drive, quiet, fast and full of pomp and circumstance every thing was electric heated and leather. But it was so so so fragile.2 rear ECU's the one that controlled the locking alarm and immobiliser kept breaking down draining the battery, leaving the car stranded.I had to carry a jump starter in the boot .Would i have another one oh hell yes XJ or XK but from being a boy a XJ-S.There on my walk to school was a Silver/blue XJ-S.

I think garry and I share a photobucket account!
I haven't even read the OP's OP, but I'll drop this here:
(BTW, I'll have an E28 shell for sale shortly, can be rolling, will be minus and engine and some wiring. 90% of the welding is done, the only bit left is the tricky bit. Go nuts!

I've had the same itch this year, after buying the Shitbox Daimler I had to get myself one to keep. Got a very good S2 XJ6 4.2 and am loving it. Beautiful sound, so quiet and powerful, surprising handling for the size and weight. I'm learning my way around the electrics in a hurry, fuel economy is frightening though. I'm driving it very politely and still seeign around 15mpg

I too had a 3.0 s type and I concur they are a lovely motor car but what a money pit!! like you said very fragile mine had warning lights like blackpool illuminations! the rear caliper seized up, the steering rack went, and the gearbox occasionally had a mind of it's own. But for some reason everytime I go on ebay I find myself looking at s types thinking, yeah i'd have another one! My favourite jags are the old xj6s, dailmer double six's and the xjs. you just can't beat an old jaaaaaaag!

Get it done. Once you get a Jaguar, they get under your skin and you will always either have one, or have just got rid and are looking for the next. I bought my first at 22, I'm now 30 and still driving the big old XJ6's daily!
