Well I have to say, I was bought a copy as a christmas stocking filler (thought "ooooh no" when I saw it). But hey had to at least have a flick through, as its a present, cant offend my parents bless them! Plus I had heard they were changing so I was curious. My observations....
-LOTS less women. The majority of the women are now in the ads. -Where women DO feature, YES they are scantily clad BUT it isnt a full porn mag like it used to be (no more nipples if you see what I mean) -Lots less badly fibreglassed 1.0's -Features on the fastest drag skyline, following a 24hr Mazda race etc. A lot more power / speed / racing oriented. -Lowriders got a mention as cool, as did led sleds and older motors! Also they are promising to do an article on VIP styling.
Low point..... the audio 'test' was basically lots of amps held up by a model with their specs by them. Yeah... tough test... errrr. Bring back Adam Rayner is all I can say there!
Overall I was very impressed. Not sure if Id start buying it yet, as even though the subject matter is improving, the quality of writing isnt the best.
One to watch if the transformation continues I WILL buy it.

Good stuff! Does anyone know how Max Power is faring these days sales wise? I was only thinking the other day how much the name 'Max Power' is used as a derogitory term, even the spotty oiks you'd expect to have a lifetime subscription seem to join in with using the name to help describe an underpowered bodykitted heap. It seems to have become a big joke where as it was once representing a certain niche in the scene that young lads were happy to be associated with. Just yesterday I was looking at a Toad alarm- Cheap, lots of features etc.... but then I read that Toad had designed the model specifically for Max Power for their range of products and I was instantly put off it. Just couldn't get the Max Power stigma out of my mind

What goes around comes around...anyone remember how gloriously irreverent Custom Car was back in the 1970's?? I have to say that reading pages and pages of schoolboy humour, interspersed with lots of semi-nakedness and the odd car set me on the path towards Petrolheadedness that I still walk on some 30 years later....and as Max Power heads towards it's 14th birthday then surely the same thing is happening to its readership. I shall break with tradition and buy this month's mag, just to read the Victor feature....I remember it peeling out of the car park at the now-gone Robin Hood on one of Riverside Rod & Custom's cruise nights a few years ago, dammit that car is the dog's danglies........ :-)

I have seen a couple of issues recently-ish which seemed to be making moves in the right direction. Theres hope for them yet. The title has become a byword for all theat is wrong with the modified car scene so they'll have to work hard at rebranding. I remember reading their editiorial where they claimed "we hate puffdahs and classic car owners" niiiiice. Possibly the lowest point in their 14 years? Will pick up a copy wednesday. With any luck they'll have such a spike in readership that they know they are on the right path! you show 'em Andy

I'm afraid I only read CC during the Keith Sueme years before he went off the do Volksworld. God all this history wants me to build a rod. But I want to be different. I want to build a ground hugging, suicide doored open fender 4x4 coupe with a twin charged US diesel V8 running the biggest turbo I can find. That might put the cat among the pigeons. Wonder if I could do it. Wonder if we as a club/forum/group of loonies should do it? OK, who in the northwest has storage? Who has the funds? Who has the US contacts? I have the ideas

Umm, not sure those figures are accurate but sales have dropped off somewhat...
The new-look Max is actually really good, this issue's got some great stuff in. There are still a few ropey motors but you gotta pay the bills. The re-design has been done to a super-high standard and it looks a lot more mature - If it was a new launch I reckon it would fly off the news stand.

It's too little, too late. Max Power will ALWAYS represent badly modified hatchbacks IMO.
