Looks like they're the last of the "easy" cars to pinch before immobilisers came in as standard.

That's where all the Belmonts went then... Ahh.
It does read like an 80s fleet managers worst nightmare, I guess they're more joyrider fodder than anything else. Shocking though...

Blimey. I'd heard some time back that the Vauxhall Belmont was the most nicked car, but I'd never seen the full list. Just goes to show that we should all make extra security provisions to stop our motors falling into the hands of this scum. My security measures at the moment involve the car being in bits ;D
I was amazed (I really shouldn't have been) at how easily my Benz was broken into - no signs of entry except the passenger door being left unlocked. No damage, nothing... I'm now thinking about immobilisers for when I'm back on the road.

Lol, Mk3 Escorts were the most stolen car of their day according to the local police when ours was tea-leaved back in the late 80's I'd be inclined to sell my car if I knew that 1 in 10 of them get nicked then the chances go up again the next year

No offence to any one who owns any of the cars on that list but I can't imagine you having much "Joy"riding in any of em I mean not a single one is RWD, I could imagine some young scrotes street cred would be severely damaged if he got caught in a stolen Maestro ;D If I was a Joyrider I would be robbing RWD Volvo's, Sierras, Beemer E30's etc, etc

A lot of cheap cars are stolen to be chopped up for parts. A mate had a Mk4 (IIRC) Escort and it had the tail lights and a bunch of other stuff ripped off from it. Notts Constabulary put out a warning saying cars from the 80s and early 90s are in big demand with theives because they are not worth paying for parts to fix. Mr. Dodgy-Backstreet-Motors can replace two headlights on a Mk4 Escort and charge £25 for doing it, the punter will pay it and he's made 100% profit cos the parts were nicked.

not overly surprised by that list TBH, it will probs feature less of em as they slip out of daily use in the future. My Mk1 XR2 still had standard locks a crappy stoplock and next to no immobilisation. Despite living in Leeds 6, working in a nightclub. it never got broken into. amazing really! v lucky there, shame its dead now like.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Find a vauxhall belmont Rip out the engine and replace it with dynamite and rig it up to the ignition system. And when some little scrote tries to nick it theres a big crater where the car was ;D Sub note:For all of the people who took that seriously,i was only joking

found it funny that mystros and montegos are being nicked the thives must spend ages trying to find them i ain't seen one for ages ;D makes me laugh the way they say car thefts are down er no like most other crimes these days its just realy not worth reporting them as nothing gets done . but if people though about it and reported every crime the stats would be up and maybe something would start getting done about them

Not a big suprise I suppose because they're so poor on security, but these cars are not a very common sight anymore. I mean Belmonts? Can't remember the last time I saw one really, same goes for most of the cars on that list. Funny that the mk3 Escort is listed but not the mk4.... the locks on the mk4 were so much better, but even so once your inside its the same car fundamentally. Yesterday the Montego that frequents my pub carpark had its window replaced with some make shift perspex, no doubt that was broken into Yet another wake up call, sorting my security out this week

but why don't they steal mk1 escorts?? you can open them with virtualy any key that fits in the lock and they are worth a bomb in parts!
Same goes for minis!.
Are car theifs stupid or is this whole thing totaly made up?

slater - if you just want cheap thrills, nick any old banger. They aren't interested in value - sentimental or real dollar. Takes seconds for them to get into 80s everyday stuff which is why EVERYONE here needs to take this as a serious warning. Don't think "Pah, no-one will be interested in nicking my <insert name of retro-shed>" because they just might.

Are car theifs stupid or is this whole thing totaly made up? The document the above link refers to actually lists the Escort Mk1 as being a high risk car to own. It's worth having a look at the whole thing - it lists every car type made between about 1980 and now, and has quite a lot of retro metal in it as well. For instance for 60-70s cars, the Escort Mk1 is high risk, the Herald is medium risk and the Austin 1100 is low risk. Some of the models are lumped together in a curse word way for statistical reasons e.g. Hunters Avengers and Horizons all as one, but it's still interesting stuff.

Are we sure this is 2005 stats? I'm sure I remember the same list being turfed out every year, since the Belmont was common.
Or is it a running total? Most of the cars on it are also on the best-seller list from the early 90's, so it stands to reason there were more mk3 Scrotes going walkies than, say, Lotus Elans.
