i need a bit of tech help guys, i bought an 95 cavalier 1.8i with the single point fuel in injection. but it has a problem the car has NO power, it starts and idles fine and will just about pull itself along, but it wont accelerate and feels like its severly restricted.were talking 50 mph foot to the floor in fifth and it just dies off completly on hills, it also whistles under throttle, hmmmm i says to myself inlet gasket? so tcc and i changed that on sunday. still no power and still whistles.i checked the spark plugs and they were well sooty , i cleaned em up but it made no difference. any ideas chaps, I'm pulling my hair out here

HT leads? Sounds very similar to the prob Russ had the other week in that Polo of similar vintage...

SPi - is that an 8v SOHC one? Is the orange "engine light" on?
HT leads are always a favourite, as are crank / cam speed sensors (not sure that'll have a cam one though).
Don't know much about the SPi ones but my ex's Cavalier gave similar grief which was sorted by a good servicing and plenty of carb cleaner!

SPi - is that an 8v SOHC one? Is the orange "engine light" on? yeah, its the 8v ohc one. there were no warning lights on. it would rev freely up to 4.5/ 5 k with no load, but as soon as you tried to drive it, it'd be lucky to go to 1k. i was all for dropping a match into the throttle body, but we were in his sisters garage, so i didnt.

Cats Blocked/collapsed internally
Intake for Air Flow Meter/airbox blocked with a dead bird (feathered variety) don't laugh it's happened
Lambda goosed
Dizzy cap lost it's carbon brush in the centre
Leads with unaceptably high resistance
Air leaks in the rubber trunking between AFM and Throttle body TB
Need a bit more diagnostic work/explaination to be honest but ^ are all things I'd look at

For blocked cats also check to see if centre or back boxes are walker variety - they are very prone to collapse - give away is grey wisps of material out of the back box when you nail it out of gear
Also feel how much exhaust gases are coming out of the tail pipe should be a giveaway if it's exhaust related
No- one has shoved a spud up the tail pipe have they?

there isnt an afm on this one bc, airbox and all trunking has been checked and is fine, some of the vacuum hose and various bits of rubber piping where all to pot/mixed up but ive been to the scrappy this morning to see how they go and ive put them all right now.this improved things a little but it still wont pull. oh and the plug leads look fairly new .

what the hell is a MAF sensor? and where would it be? Between Throttle Body and Airbox/filter Round tube with two wires exposed to the airflow one measures temperature one measures air flow using a platinum wire Bit sensitive to poor treatment IHTH
