Bortaf's (from this very forum) old Mk5 cortina estate 2.3 Ghia S estate. Apparently was the last one known to the club and had been in ashes to ashes and Michael Caine film "is there anybody there?" Still on the road according to DooVLA, which can only be a good thing.

First off, sort any rot within it - that front wing looks a bit crusty. Judging by the wheels, it looks like a 1600 - if so, then try to get a Saloon rear axle for it, they have a much higher diff ratio and so helps with motorway cruising. Decent shock absorbers would be my next move - I learnt to drive in one of these 23 years ago and they were soggy even then! - but harder springs will not improve matters when they are not controlled properly by knackered dampers. New-old-stock is better than worn-out-old-stock! Next, if insurance will allow, a decent exhaust mainfold and system - they're cheap enough. Then a twin-choke weber. That'll make it rapid enough to start worrying the TDi crowd.
Don't, however, f-muck it up by trying to emulate the VW scene - roof-rack, rust, overly-stretched tyres and too low to get a jack* under it - with something that's so obviously not...
*Remember this does not jack up on the sills with a half-scissors jack, but through the sills with the Ford-specific jack...

m ore than an inch (25mm in new money) will start to where insides of frt tyres(due to wicked camber) & cause it to follow ruts & white lines. as said for handling go for thicker rollbars & decent shockers, when time comes replace the axle end void bushes with decent poly ones (not cheepo floflex dobtfit ones). will await the flameing from the stance brigade (what would i know). get yourself on www.buysellcortina.co.uk

Nice work mate, another one saved from being mindlessly being smashed to pieces. Ive posted this pic before, but I like it.Photo shop done by Volksangyl I believe. Would be very easy, and fairly cheap to get something like this done to yours. The long lines suit it. Ive lowered mine 50mm on proper springs, new standard shocks. As said above, needs uprated ones definatley. That was the plan, but it failed its last MOT on all four shocks, so had to get new ones in a rush! Will get proper ones soon. Also, it does wear inside tyres, as above, and I cant get a normal trolly jack under it, and it wont go on ramps very well, but, it looks dang cool!(I think anyway)

The safest way to cut springs is wearing converse all stars while under the influence of alcohol.

cheers, danburger, you saved me digging the link out. I reckon the beige one only really needs the window frames/pillars blacking and that's it, it's already a distinctive thing. I like the brown one peckerman posted, never seen one like that before.

Saloons don't have a much higher diff, they are the same or very VERY close (IE 2.3 estate 3.45 saloon 3.44 diff). Exhausts , ashley do a not very good fitting but cheap zorst but they are for the saloon so the tailpipe will need altering/extending, shocks are allways worth changing and also the bushes!! there are loads under there so get new ones or polly BUT don't poly all of them just a few or it can cause stress fractures to the chassis. Just a twin choke on a 1.6 will make a small differance but in no way will it make it fly like a modern!, change to a 2.0, cheapest and easyest 35BHP you will ever find in one simple mod;)
It does jack up from under the sill NOT through it but personly I allways buy a cheap trolly jack and never use the standard pillar jack and I do meen NEVER lol As craig says any more than an inch will cause tyre scrub on the fronts through excessive camber, he knows his stuff.
