When the weather gets a bit warmer I will be buying a new wing and painting it myself, and painting the front panel which is a bit rusty while i'm at it.
I have a compressor and a spray gun, but what else will I need?
What paint will I want? Some paints need a clear coat and some don't? The polo doesn't have a clear coat as standard I don't think.
If I can only get waterbased, how does it need to be cured and how long does it take?

If you use celly you need a celly mask, primer and topcoat, celly thinners and cheapo thinners for gunwash. For 2K (2-pack) which I recommend because it sprays easier you need a 2K mask made by 3M which is about £25, primer and topcoat, 2K thinners and cheap thinners for gunwash. 2K needs a lot less prep work than cellulose and you'll only need to give it 2 or 3 coats maximum.
Also you need masking tape, something to put the wing on when you spray it, sand paper, rubbing compound and wax.
I wouldn't normally recommend this but use a cheap 2K paint because otherwise that wing will look incredibly shiny compared to the rest of the car!

2K you need to cover all your skin and your eyes etc. as it is absorbed though all sorts or pores and eyes and whatever. Only time I used it I felt like chucking up for hours afterwards and I was wrapped up like a spaceman. Evil stuff.
If you can get celly I'd use that.
If you can only get waterbased then I think it needs a clear coat. I don't thing theres a waterbased one stage paint yet? Or so I was told not long back.
To cure waterbased you need heat and air movement. For a wing you can get away with a hairdryer but it might take a while...

Thanks guys. I take it spraying outside = bad for things in paint... good for health?
Does 2k keep? If so I may try and get some now and keep it until I need it.

2k goes off so quick you don't normaly have many problems spraying outside. I cirtanly leave the workshop door open to dispurse the fumes evertime i spray and don't have troubles.

Can't help with direct advice but there's a good article in the new issue of Practical Classics about using water based stuff at home....

2K like other isocyanate based things is very dodgy you can use it for years with no problem and then suddenly become sensitised to it. Once that happens you suffer with industrial asthma and you have no tolerance of it in any quantites in the future. I know you can get 2K masks but really they are not good enough unless you have a tyvek suit and good goggles/face mask. Take care (says the person who has used 2k outside while holding his breath )

Incidentally there are a few places on ebay that sell and mix cellulose. Never used any of them but have asked for prices and they are comparable to the paint shop I use. Might have to look for that Practical classics seth

Difficult to say how much it would cover, depends how many coats or how thick it was put on you would probably get a bonnet and maybe a wing if you are very lucky with 500ml. If its your first time using it get a litre so at least you have a bit to practice with. To be honest that seems a bit expensive. Normally 1 litre would be around 15 quid, but I havent bought any paint this year so I don't know if everywhere has put prices up because of the limited availability of cellulose. I would definetely look around to check prices first though

so whats the deal on using celly? does it all need done before jan 08 or is that legislation tosh? Not 100% sure what the current situation is exactly, but as far as I know production of it for automotive use has stopped from end of december. And only existing stocks of the paint are available for sale this year. After Dec 07 its only available for sale for a "classic car" for original resto, boats and industrial It breaks down like this: it’s legal to buy it, it’s legal to own it and, if you’re the proprietor of a paint shop, it’s legal to sell it. It’s legal to carry it, which doesn’t really matter ‘cause — get a load of this — if the cops stop you, it’s illegal for them to search you. Mars bar to the first person who spots the modified quote ;D
