looking at doing a project, a 1981 car. my dad keeps banging on about how its a 25 year old car and the wiring loom will need to be redone and its going to cost £1k. i think its fair to say i wont be able to get one from a scrappy thats for sure.
but anyway is he talking rubbish? i would have thought it would stand up over 25 years. this car is typical project, taken appart, needs putting back together again. will the wiring loom be needing replacement for sure after 25 yr?
cheers!

My Charmant is 23 years old and all the electrics work faultlessly, I've never heard of wiring looms needing replacement due to that sort of age. I would guess if it's been kept out in a field for 10 years or something maybe but sounds like rubbish to me. Would love to know where he got the £1000 quote from.

Last year, i dragged a '68 thunderbird out of a field next to a local garage, sat since '84, the car was a rotten mess, but a fresh battery on, and virtually all of the wiring worked! I think rule of thumb, aslong as all the terminals are clean, and youv'e got good earths, you'll be fine

;)I'll sort it out the wiring for you and I'll only charge £975! ;D Seriously though, what sort of car is it? What's making your dad say that? Is everything working? Even better, you could show us some pics!

1981...should be fine! I've seen some extreme cases where after years of storage in poor conditions has led to the loom just disolving when you touch it but that's a rare one.
All of my cars have been a minimum of 26 years old and NEVER had any wiring issues at all! Hell, even all the connectors were in great condition!

my dad keeps banging on about how its a 25 year old car and the wiring loom will need to be redone and its going to cost £1k. That's just the sort of brainwashed nonsense story that the car makers love....and what drives people to go out and spend £20k every 2 years on another bland, anodyne washing machine with wheels on ;D

haha thought as much. my dad knows an awful lot about cars and mechanics but is hyper negative and keeps telling me all these worst case scenarios that according to him WILL HAPPEN, ITS A 25YR OLD CAR!
I think he got the £1k bit from an article he read on the XJS getting completely rewired to sort its gremlins.
I'm pretty certain the car has been in a good climate most its life as its a US import. I'm not saying to anyone as yet what car it is just yet, once I get it ill tell the world tho as its my boyhood dream!!! dream is the only clue I'm giving.
and I need to sell my ktm to finance this within the next 2 weeks, once thats done I'm sorted!
btw getting a skud in about 20mins so ill post some pics of that in abit!
cheers peeps/

I can imagine a pro-job re-wire of an XJS could well run into thousands. But for less exotic machines... no wai!
Tell yer dad to STFU! ;D

Rubbish tbh. Pfffft my Pop is EVEN OLDER than MadMaxx's bug (mwahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahah ) and the wiring in that is fine. On REALLY old cars the switches start to wear out but I guess his isn't old enough to be doing that yet at under half a century old

The wiring on my 1982 car is in fine condition, don't fall into the trap of thinking 'cos its old it must be curse word' !
One of my friends was fortunate/unfortunate (*delete as required) enough to be bought a new Micra, well last of the old shape, a few years ago by her mother.
Recently it got a CD player fitted & on testing it one of the speakers wasn't working. Never one to doubt my own good works, I took the door trim off to find a speaker connector a little greenish with corrosion. Cleaned it up & it worked a treat.
Her mother caught wind of this small problem & goes & gets a new car ordered up for her the following week!!! What with folks stupidity, despite me explaining that all was fine in the world of Nissan.
To top it off, the new CD player was left in the car when it was traded in !!!

The wiring in my Oxford is original and still works great and its 43 years old..... is that burning I can smell?.....
More "modern" cars have very reliable wiring, even more so that the older cars. Id be very suprised if its suffered any damage due to age.
Great motor Tillio!
