Wondered how long it would be before you bought another taxi mate, after speaking to you about steels on sierra's a while back I got the bug again so I'm back in a sapphire, will be keeping my eye on this so keep the updates coming please, send me a pm if your short on tools or general tat you can use we are clearing out loads of kit from the barracks so I might be able to use it as a. Excuse to fill the boot up and drive down to have a mosey at your car. Cheers steve

Glad to be of help Robin. If there's ever anything else you need, you know where I am (or where 'we' are ) Sorry I didn't get time to buff them over with a wire brush and give them some paint, but I'd recommend doing this before you think about fitting them. I love the way this car is going and I'm enjoying all the updates. KEEP 'EM COMING!

Made a start on bracing and stiffening the rear suspension on the Sierra. Firstly I removed the seam sealer, sound deadening and paint.... ...the offered up, the triangle of box section I cut (almost cut my finger off doing this! Not good)... ...then a line of weld across the top and bottom, and some stick welds along the sides... ...pretty nawt! And the other side... ...next step is to weld the bar across the strut tops... Also picked up a gen-u-wine Ford RS option bumper splitter from Weblefeck, basically it bolts on to any standard Sierra bumper. Think I'll ditch the fogs in favour of RS500 style mesh grills...

After having a talk with rtlkyuubi (aka Ryan) at the last A52 playday, he said that on his Sierra, with the adjustable TCA set with a good amount of camber that there was very little thread left on the track rod end. Not good, the last thing I want is a feeble amount of thread on a safety critical part! After a little bit of research I found this can be solved by buying fancy longer rose jointed track rod ends (which compbrake do for about £75 which IMO is a bit expensive for some track rod ends) or the Drifters favourite rack spacers! Sadly Ford never envisaged the need to wedge washers between the rack and rack ends, so there is very little thread. On BMW's and Nissan's you can get away with up to a 5mm washer as they have more thread. In addition to these allowing for safer adjustment, they also have the excellent feature of increasing lock, which is always handy for drifting ;D. So after seeing various designs on the internet I approached a local engineering company (well marine engineering, because Brixham is fish town lol) who made me these..... Standard Sierra rack end.... Then with spacer.... I also had them make a bush for the top mounts. The coilovers locate directly in the top mount from the bottom perfectly, but from the top the thread just seemed to poke out the top with no nice flat surface for the nut to sit on. So these bushes should resolve that problem. Bushes... Top mount... Bush inserted... Now I can finally get the fronts fitted!

Here's another suspension mod idea, did these tonight for an ice racing car, mostly to see how they hold up. What front spindles are you going to run? I've got a set of drilled scorpio ones but have thought about wisefab style spacers under the spindles, which would allow for a hugely improved roll center with a properly low car. The ARB attachment bolt looks great, an alternative route would have been to attach it to the struts (like this) which has a few positive effects, including making the arb stiffer. But I guess you'll run stiff enough springs and won't need an ultra stiff arb Greatly inspirational build btw, it will be epic when done

Here's another suspension mod idea, did these tonight for an ice racing car, mostly to see how they hold up. I've spoken to various people about modified knuckles for Sierra's before, my main concern would be around having too much lock Sierra's seem to go over centre quite quickly and don't have huge arches either. What front spindles are you going to run? I've got a set of drilled scorpio ones but have thought about wisefab style spacers under the spindles, which would allow for a hugely improved roll center with a properly low car. I do have a spare set of 4WD hubs/knuckles/spindles (whatever you want to call them) laying about, however I've already bought 2WD coilovers so I'm going to stick with the standard ones. As for lowering the track rod end mount I've seen it done, but I'll see how I get on with it. The ARB attachment bolt looks great, an alternative route would have been to attach it to the struts (like this) which has a few positive effects, including making the arb stiffer. But I guess you'll run stiff enough springs and won't need an ultra stiff arb I put serious thought and research into the drop link location, the reason I decided against mounting it to the strut was two fold. Firstly all the photos and build thread I could find for high spec Sierra Cosworths had the mount to the arm, and secondly it would have meant welding on a bracket to the shiney new coilovers, which I wasn't massively up for! So I went for the tried and tested route. The springs in the coilovers are pretty stiff anyway and the ARB bar is really thick and heavy so it should keep it nice and flat.

I've cut my knuckles again, this time to give zero ackerman, so i'm sure i'll have to figure out the over-centre issue in due time IIRC there's not much space at all to move the steering rack, but maybe offset rack spacers would be an idea? The hungarian guy on driftworks claims 53 degrees of lock, so it should be possible ;D Although i'm sure you'll do fine for starters with the extra lock the spacers give you At least until you replace the twink with something more worthy! ;D

I really need to get on and get my spare hubs drilled out to 50mm sooner rather than later. Need to crack on with the golf coilover conversion!

Feel a bit curse word off TBH not only has the exceptionally bad weather caused a flood in the unit but my friggin MIG welder is playing up, works fine for 2/3 minutes then without any change to the settings it starts spitting and being generally mega dog doo doo! As a result the strut brace looks truly dreadful it's done but I'm so far from happy with it, I'm contemplating cutting it out and starting again. Photos from afar, I'm too embarrassed to take close ups... On a brighter note the RS bumper extension fits and looks better than I thought I would. Although due to my original bumper not having fog lights, the extension won't fit unless I cut holes or ditch the fog lights. I'm not a big fan of fog lights, so they've gone in the bin! Should hopefully have the coilovers and the rest of the suspension gubbins fitted on Monday! Can't wait ;D

Looking good. The rs skirt looks great on there, being red reminds me of that awesome 3 door pinto turbo one from Sweden haha. You planning on side skirts on it too?

You planning on side skirts on it too? Don't know TBH depends how it looks once I've fitted the front splitter properly, I would prefer the RS option skirts but if a set of Cosworth ones come up cheap enough who knows Finally got some of the suspension work done today. I'll try and put it in some kind of order, so firstly...... I removed the towbar (which seems to be a standard feature on every Sierra I've owned) then rolled the rear arch with my trusty hammer and splashed paint over the damaged bit, I welded large thick wash to each side of the bottom mount as people had suggested this would probably be a good idea. So the rear now looks like this..... Only problem I ran into was the top bush on one of the rear coilovers with an 8mm hole and should have been a 10mm hole. So we had to crack the drill out and run a 10mm bit through it. Odd?!?!? The front is proving to be a bit more of a pain! The compression strut mounts had 8mm holes and need 10mm holes so they needed drilling out and the inner TCA mount had a 10mm bolt and the subframe accepted an 8mm bolt, so the subframe required drilling out too. Really weird as these aren't Cosworth specific parts so they should have been machined correctly surly? ? Anyway there on now.... Then I ran out of time, as per usual! So the front coilovers and top mounts will have to wait for another day. I've made the templates for the adjustable top mounts just got to get them perfectly straight then drill into the metal.... Also I've wanted a hydro for ages so I took the plunge and ordered a Chizfab one through Trampdrift and also ordered a deep dish steering wheel too. Seemed a shame not too lol!
