Simple question - what will tow a 3.5 ton trailer legally? Discovery - yep, Defender - yep. P38 Rangerover - I assume so? What else? I see most L200/Navara type things are only rated to 2.5 - 2.8 tons. What about vans? Transits? If so which models? Cheers.

All landrover, bar Freelander, are rated at 3500kg.
Not yet come across a van that can. Our Transit 350's at work were rated at 2300 kgs.

100 series Landcruisers are, yet the 80 series for some mad reason aren't (2.8t), even though they're both around 2.5t themselves & have a related 4.2l 6cyl turbo!

Dammit, I am fed up owning Landrovers and fancy a Japanese truck, but they will not tow 3.5 tons. Isuzu trooper......What age/model is that as I used to have one as a works truck and it was only good for 3 tons.
As for vans, I THINK that some of the larger Ivecos and Renault Mascot will - models with twin rear wheels. My brother in law has a Mascott tipper that will tow 3.5 tons, but I aint keen on owning a tipper or flatbed. A van would do at a push, but I would much prefer a 4x4.

3500kg gross weight isn't it? I.e trailer plus truck is not to exceed 3.5t? Nah mate ... tow vehicle plus trailer is 'Gross Train Weight.'

Gross Vehicle Weight is the top number (2235kg in this example) - this is the maximum allowed weight for the car/van fully loaded. Max towing weight is the lower number (4235kg) and as pog rightly says, INCLUDES the weight of the car making the max trailer weight 2000kg.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Difference in terminology then. Gross vehicle weight - The max weight of car/van/truck etc Gross trailer weight - The max weight of towed item (including load) Gross Train weight. The combined weight of both of above.
Also now referred to as MAM. Maximum Authorised Mass.

I think with vans, its the ones with 'chassis' ie tippers etc , rather than monocoque panel vans that have the greater capacity, as there is something strong enough to bolt the tow point to.

The laws for vans changed recently if your using a 3'5 ton van towing a trailer for commercial purposes you have to have an operators licence. If it's private use I think your Ok but it's worth checking before you buy anything.

I was told by my local classic car dealers that they could only tow the car trailer when loaded with a Rolls Royce, (in excess of 3 tonnes combined) with either a Landrover or a Trooper. The vehicle they were using was a LWB Trooper Bighorn

True, but I am not based in UK, so this doesnt apply to me. It adds a minor complication though - to re-register a UK vehicle here ( I will be buying in UK as its much cheaper) it must be an original UK / EU model. J or US imports are pretty much impossible to register here now.

Shogun,
Dirt cheap too!
My P reg 2.8 diesel one was at least 6000kg (can't remember, could have been 6400 kg) gross train weight, and unladen is pretty much bang on 2000kg, so 4 tonnes on the back is no problem.
I towed a jag XJR on a 1 tonne unladen weight trailer, which was around 2900kg total and it was great, no problems at all coming over the cat and fiddle pass!

My 35-10 can tow 3 tonnes, which was the reason I got it.
