Isn't this just standard government policy of old?
Cars come in two types: 1. pre-74 british with tweed driving gloves and whatever else Stirling Moss wears 2. new ones
The discrimination against cars made between 74-92 is absolutely disgraceful. Do these people not think we have to take an MOT or what? Or do they think that us criminal types have a scam to get round a computerised and centralised emissions recording system?

This is disgracefull. I agree with everybodys comments here. The thought just occured to me, in regards to electric hybrids. I presume you could enter city centres if you ran an electric car, so..........(drumroll)............why not just take the sparkplugs out and use the starter motor to go around town....... ;D The only limatation would be, that you would need a car without a brake servo or power steering. Disadvantages would be, you'll flatten your battery real quick if driven more than a couple of miles. Ditto, if you use the no-sparkplugs electric car at night with the headlights on. Best to carry a spare battery, me thinks.I suspect there could be other problems too, like wear and tear on the drivetrain/flywheel. starter motor and battery; getting the car classed as a electric hybrid and needing a light rather than heavey car. ........ok, perhaps it not a good idea. My old imp warped the head, driving along the motorway and I ended up with no compression, whats so ever. I managed about 3 miles and about 35mph in 4th on the starter motor !! Still ended up on a tow truck though.

The bit about 'old rusty cars' from the 80s and early 90s was said by the spokesman for Stuttgart council, not anybody from the UK. Stuttgart is Mercedes city, so the reasoning behind their decision is obvious.
West Germany dosesn't really have old cars - anything over about 6-7 years old tends to get flogged to Turkey (or Iraq judged by the number of Carltons and Cavaliers in the Baghdad roadside pics) or Eastern Europe. I don't know about the former East, but there certainly ain't loads of Trabants and Wartburgs running about anymore.

This plan is great news for me as I'm often in Edinburgh... and knowing the council they'll more than likely put this scheme into practice.
This means I won't be able to use my Sunday driver (1982 Honda) if I go into the city.
These people 'in power' need their heads examined.
My car did just short of 800 miles last year (several longer runs rather than lots of short ones) and runs to Edinburgh were in the majority.
As for whether my car pollutes excessively... whats the MOT emmisions test for. Furthermore my car isn't exactly a flying machine so doesn't get driven fast in the slightest.
Grrr.

funny that they quote Stuttgart; Stuttgart is one of the best examples of stupid politicians (only to be topped by Munich) ignoring facts. The whole discussion in germany is not against old cars, it is against particulates. Our cars here are taxed by emissions, so an old car without cat is the worst, all new cars must have Euro IV. Everything in between can be banned in certain areas in some cities... but the fact is: particulates are NOT made by petrol cars, so even a Euro 1 car with first generation cat produces less particulates than an Mk.III Golf TDI, which would be allowed to drive... so that does not make sense at all. But these politicians ignore the facts and think, that all old cars are rubbish... we have a lot of old cars in germany, but you don't see too much of them on the roads, cars without cats are nearly gone, as the road tax is ridiculos high for them. The most annoying thing for me is, that there is no nationwide law, every city can do as it wants... so this does confuse people....
and especially Stuttgart is not an example for all the bigger cities in europe; Stuttgart is in a valley sourrounded by hills, they always have smog problems due to the geography... you can't compare this with Edinburgh....
and the funny thing is; my Type 25 is converted to Euro 2, i can drive whenever and whereever i want, but still, the whole thing is stupid...

If this is of any use: 10 years ago I was a press officer at the SMMT, and we had figures that showed how Oxford Street (despite banning private cars) was one of the dirtiest streets in the UK. Why? Because of all those filthy-engined Routemasters and FX4s belching out fumes...

Ive just read what you all have written and to be honest I think it is a leaked April fools joke read this quote.
The scheme will crack down on cars that produce toxic substances such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrous oxides (NOx), unburned hydrocarbons (HC) and tiny carbon specks known as particulates. These products are linked to breathing problems and cancers
since when has nitrous oxides (NOx), ever been made from a car as its individual compounds are nitrogen which from the atmosphere and oxygen which for most of us is quite safe to breath. so if your car is producing nitrous oxides then it must be Eco friendly
so I stopped reading after this point.......sorry.

It's a load of curse word.
My modern company car is much more polluting than my 'rust bucket' 1991 Alfa 75.... I know this from the cloud of black smoke that it belches out every time I floor the throttle.

London were going to do it, but they didnt, the americans were going to introduce mandatory scrapping of all pre-1980 cars in about 1989, but they didnt. Its unlikely this will become a reality in a country with a public that does a pretty good job of getting rid of old cars anyway. I agree that if it were a real threat then chatting about it on a forum will not help, neither will signing an online petition, and as for taking "real action" - what constitutes that? A letter to your MP?! starting civil unrest? Chinning Blair? most people don't give a toss anyway its only us lot that want to keep Mk2 Cavaliers and seventies Datsuns alive.
Theres nothing anyone can do but with a bit of luck it wont happen anyway, so lets carry on with this thread, lets highlight amongst ourselves just how ignorant, out of touch, illogical and totally inconsequential some of these government nobcheeses actually are when it comes to what machines should have the right to use the roads they all display tax discs for, it wont solve anything, but its a laugh, and it its either that or trying to get free porno thumbnails to expand into proper images only to get "page cannot be displayed"
