I second the filing cabinet thing, you can get ones with A4 sized drawers, I paid £10 for one of mine and £20 for the other, much better built then el cheapo crapo tool boxes. I had an American Pro one when I first started on the spanners but was scared of farting near it in case it blew away. I've got my stuff in a variety of cantilever toolboxes one of them is an American Pro and compared to the rest the quality is curse word, wouldn't have another one.

Daveyboy, I have tool chests and cabinets from Snap on and Halfords Industrial/Professional. I would say stay away from cheap curse word and stick to the good stuff.
Snap On cabinets are on Ebay all the time and are not too expensive used - you'll be able to sell them for the same price in future, and they work and keep working. I use a big multi-drawer roller cabinet that I bought second hand for £170ish.
Halfords Pro are also good - I have a roller cabinet and a top box that are both reliable. Much lighter than Snap On if you need any sort of portability.
I have a Halfords trade card which gets good discounts on the tool boxes, and they are on sale quite often too. Maybe see if you can borrow a trade card?

Thanks fellas - some useful posts there. When I had my garage I had a rack on the wall for screwdrivers, a rack for sockets and a rack for spanners. I had two 3 drawer wooden chests for other bits and bibs and a toolbox I used to car out to the car with handy tools in. Now however I have a box of all my sockets and spanners, squashed underneath a bag of screwdrivers, both sitting on top of said useful toolbox. I have various socket sets now broken as they are scattered about a leaky bike shed. Hence my problems! I have access to a trade card and was very tempted by the cheaper halfords one but it still was nearly £200 and I can't help but think of what that £200 would do if I invested it in the project. Oh and I know it is an investment in the project! Might have to bite the old bullet I think!

I looked into this a while ago and decided the best rout was a 2nd hand snap-on. However a mate of mine (who incidentally has a 3k Snap On box at work) says makro or costco (can't remember which) do some really good boxes for a couple hundred quid. He was one at home and says it's good.

Have you had a look at the Clarke tool boxes from Machine Mart. I used Clarke boxes on a home made "mobile" using snap on castors, junked dexion, and 18mm marine ply...even has chrome hand rails either end, made from a shower upright. Designed by me to suit my needs..

Halfords have an offer on their professional range at the moment, £199.99 when you buy a top box and cabinet. BundleAnyone have any experience of these, I'm considering getting them.

That is what I've got. Bought it at least 15 years ago. Still in perfect working order. Couple spots of surface rust but can be expected in damp garage. Don't know if they have changed anything but mine is decent thickness metal. Cost me nearly £400 all those years ago ! Paul h

Well I got the ones from Halfords today - there's a great deal online, I took a photo with my generic smart phone of the web page as I had to show them as they didn't believe me! Went through the till as the £199 and I'm really pleased and impressed with them! Solid build quality, I can see myself getting up early with a cuppa organising my tools into it tomorrow ;D

Hi, I had the same hiccup last year, but they honoured the online deal. I did 'reserve and collect' and printed the page Colin
