Hi Retro Riders, I have just bought a cheap 1997 Audi a8 4.2 v8 quattro to go with my collection of V-Dubs (not to my wifes liking... lol) and plan to give it a tickle of the lowering stick with new rims. I have been looking on you tube and I have seen a look that I really like from the states. I'm looking to drop it about 30-40 mm and stick some 19ins Lamborghini Gallardo rims and tint the double glazing lol This is what i'm starting with Then to something like this

Thanks for the for the replies guys. I originally bought this old beast for the 4.2 v8 engine to put in my VW T25 crew cab. You can attach a 996 6 speed gearbox and some other audi parts to make it sit in the back of a vw bus. Well, i was looking on ebay and it was up as spares or repair. After a run up to Colchester i was pleasantly surprised how well it sounded had been looked after. Its showing 125k miles and i recon its original as the leather seat and the rest of the interior is lovely. It has a factory Bose sound system, electric seats, electric adjustable steering coloum, electric sunroof, air-con that works ...etc etc. I think the previous owner got scared as the jobs that need doing proberly put them off so it was sold off on the cheap. The ignition barrel won't hold its position when you turn it over so i have had to make a temporary device to hold the key in its position. There is a small coolant leak in a not so accessible place but i'm sure i will get at it. There was 8 days mot left so i took the chance and taxed it and went for a spin. Man these things haul ! 300bhp and 400nm of torque. and made of alloy. If it went badly wrong in the transimission or the engine goes pop i could run it in for scrap and see a good return. lol The crew cab will have to wait now as i want to give this some treatment! Jobs to do: replace ignition barrel,

Your going to need to lower it a lot more than 30-40mm to make 19s and low-pros sit in the arch nicely. This is my old one, running 19s with 215/35R19 tyres [f] and 235/35R19 [r] Front was dropped about 120mm and the rear about 150mm As it's a pre-facelift, it has the 4-speed auto, and they are much more reliable, and less prone to going pop than the later 5-speed.

Hey VIP, your car looks rude man! Did you use after market springs or did you cut them down? Were the dampers changed? Did it compromise the ride quality too badly? That's the look i,m after with the polished Gallardo rims. Your rims look sweet as fella. Love it!

I can't recall the brand, but they were A8 specific coilovers, which had to be sourced from Germany, as no-one was offering them for the application in the UK at the time. They were about £700 delivered. You can see them in this pic, which I took to show how low it was. 30mm from the floor to the bottom of the trailing arm mount.

Hi VIP, Was there enough clearance to cope with road use? Is there enough camber adjustment to cope with that size drop or does it rip up the tyre walls?

You are so lucky that there even is such a thing as a cheap Audi A8! Even a '90s one is still $10-15 grand in Australia, if you can find one.

Hi VIP, Was there enough clearance to cope with road use? Is there enough camber adjustment to cope with that size drop or does it rip up the tyre walls? As with any very low car, you had to plan your trip in advance. I managed to rip the drivers side subframe mounts out after hitting raised ironworks during local road resurfacing. No camber adjustment was made, the geometry of the suspension doesn't induce much negative camber anyway when lowered.
