Who's up for this?
I want some number plates making. These are the criteria:
I want square plates (12x8.5") They are to be reflective They are to be pressed ali They are to use the "Robot" font used in the early 80s.
I have spoken to Framptons who sadly say they cannot supply the plates I want. I am told that the plates I am after were made by Sercks and Framptons think these are unavailable.
I think Retroriders will know if theres any way of getting these!
Just to confirm this is the "sqaure serif" or "space age" or "robot" font which was typically used on Mk5 Cortinas, Mk3 Escorts and some BL/ARG cars.

I have heard stories on serval sources of old plate making kit being thrown away or seized by "the powers that be" when the new number plate laws came in back in 2001.
If only Sercks made them then if they have junked their press tool then thats it.
I'm a total anorack with number plates. Back when I was into Vauxhalls there was a reall saught after plate to have, IIRC it was a Hills one, only in black & grey and the "2" was mis shapena nd one of the other letters always came out slightly wonky looking. Maybe the H. Had "Hills" and their logo in the top corner in silver. A mate had a HB Viva with them on. Ever so proud he was. Or was it Mills? I forget now. Someone claimed to have seen a reflective set in the same wonky font and this sparked one of those "club debates"...
Ah, the trivia.
Funnily enough I thought these Sercks plates looks cr@p at the time. Funny how rose tinted specs changes stuff, huh?
How much effort would it be to make up a number plate press? A mate has a 10 ton bearing press, just need some blank plates and some die tools...

Yeah I heard that the Gestapo seized the machinery too. However some must have escaped the sweep or have been given special dispensation - I can't see Lord Chumley-Merryweather being too happy having to have new style ANPR-friendly plates on his 1924 Bentley! As for making a set, I can't see it being all that hard, although making the dies and getting the spacing right could prove tricky!

Theres a company that advertises in PC magazine, but i forget the company and cant find the advert. You could go online to their website to see how the plates would look before you order a set. They did black and silver tin, plastic white letters on tin and the 90's type pressed ally that you mention. Ill have a good dig about and see what I can find. a set was £25 IIRC

Cheers fellas I'll have a sniff round see what turns up.
Benzboy, its much easier getting black plates done. Pre-1973 cars you can have just about anything on but the reflective stuff all seems to need to be 2001 compliant acrylic toss.
This is all becauseof those tossers with italic font plates. Another reason to hate the tossers.

Sounds like you need some German bike plates then. I remember some of the GTI boys went over to germany and had their plates pressed in the registration offices (each large town has one). Wonder if any of our Germany based RRers can help??

This number plate issue really gets to me, one of my cars has EU plates on the front & rear & looks daft. Another has an EU plate on the front & original on the back & looks dafter!
I've sent a nicely written email to the FBHVC for their perusal.

Pl8s is Framptons and they want £45 for the regular pressed metal ones.
Craigsplates only do the yellow ones in the 12x8.5" that I need (and thats £19.50 for one plate!)

Mitch makes number plates, could try PM-ing him. I do know of somewhere that sells the necessary letters / backings etc to make pre-2001 reflective plates but strictly not for road use - they're sold as "information signs". We used some to make an information sign with the registration number of a car on it.

While on the subject I hope you don't mind me asking a related question on your thread AK.
The original (dealer name on them) plates on the Herald are falling apart. They're the reflective type with seperate plastic letters. I'm presuming there's no need for them to be reflective and I could "restore" tham by removing the letters, spraying yellow/white and then putting the letters back?
We've got so used to it with these plates it would probably look a bit wierd with new black/silver

Indeed, the letters are just clipped on at the back so long as you can get the clips off without breaking the lugs of the letters you should be fine.
Ibelieve that if the plates are not black they have to be reflective but I'm sure you can get some kind of high-vis paint from somewhere which will do the trick.
