Hello folks, I was crusing home from college at 60 today, then before i could even think, a pheasant flew into the inside lane, proceeded to try and take off, and went straight through my screen. As i discovered, it was toughened glass. I had no idea of the difference until today, learned the hard way! No real point to this post, i suppose its a message to all, if youve still got toughened glass, get it replaced with laminated! As far as I'm concerned, mild cuts to the face and a headache due to a pheasant to the face at 60 mph, other than that, no damage. Gotta find me a new screen now!

Shitt the bed.Glad your ok but on a lighter note I hope that birds now plucked and in the pot! Years ago round here a car hit a dear and chucked it up over the roof.It went throw the windscreen of the van behind killing the two people in the front. Do you normally get birds chucking themselves at you?

Glad you came off better than the bird.
Interesting to see the zone toughing in action, with the centre of the screen staying relatively intact compared to the outer section.

Holy curse word... That's just mental...!!! I am pleased that you weren't more seriously hurt, a big old vulture like that could've knocked you clean our sir! As all the others have said that bird needs to be cooked and eaten in honour of your 'ye olde' windscreen...

Reminds me of when I was driving into Mallory Park this year. Was cruising up the road between the housing and the main circuit gates in my low Focus, as you may remember from the first RRG there are speed bumps, so you can't go quick. Must have been doing about 10-15mph when I noticed a pigeon standing in the road, looking at me.
''He'll fly off, he's seen me''.
Went over him and didn't feel a thing. Thought he must have ducked under the sump.....then I saw the mess in the road in the rear view mirror.
Ooops.

Damn! Glad your OK matey. Could have been a lot worse. I had an owl hit my corsa years ago. Doing about 60 and it flew straight into the passanger door. Pulled over and there was a massive dent in passanger door. The owl flapped around in the road for a bit and flew off. Git. Got your Sunday roast sorted though

I quickly glanced at the first picture and thought geez lucky you didn't have a passenger....then realised it was on your drivers side! (durrrr)
You are very very lucky there matey, had a wake up call myself the other day (non driving related) and really makes you think! New respect for life and all that!!

I had two pigeons do that within 3 miles a month or two back. as you say, they always fly off as the last minute so I don't bother braking for them. neither of these did makes quite a mess/cloud of feathers when youre in a lupo with about 3" ground clearance. october is silly season for pheasants. the season starts on the first, so all of this years birds will have just been released, so have no car/road sense at all, cos theyve never seen one before. I had half a dozen standing together in the road in front of me on the way in this morning, with no effort to move. I once ran over the same pheasant twice in my vw fastback. it flew out of a hedge across the road in front of me at bonnet height, bounced off the peak of the bonnet so hard it went 6 foot forwards, then I hit it again with the passenger headlight! the best(worst) bird/car interface ive even seen though happened to my uncle, who is ironically, a gamekeeper. he hit a french partridge head-on that flew out of a field next to the road near my parents house at 2ft off the floor, as they're a ground bird. he was doing 75-ish, plus the speed of the bird. he was driving a w126 SEC merc. it went straight through the grille and the rad leaving a clear fist-sized hole, hit the fan (removing all skin, feathers and quite a lot of blood and distributing them all over the inside of the hot engine bay, so they instantly baked on) then the remains of the bird embedded ltself between the block and the (hot) exhaust manifold and cooked itself! it took him 5 garages to find someone who would even consider fixing it, and understandably he had to pay a fair bit over the odds to get em to do it......

My word you where lucky. Just be thankfull it was not a wild boar as where I live they are a deadly risk, just imagine what 100 kilos of wild pig would have done to you and your mini, Glad you are okay. I have a nice recipe if you need it ,pheasant in red wine gravy!

Really fancy a bit of game bird now. Don't we all ?!?! Oooh, Matron! On a more serious note tho, I wouldn't want a pheasant (or ANY other kind of bird) in my face at 60mph! Had toughened screens go before at around 40mph and it's hard enough pulling up safely with a shattered screen without any other 'distractions' (Funnily enough one of mine was a Mini) Glad you survived to tell the tale(feathers. - I'll get my coat)

I hit a fox once in a Mk2 Fiesta diesel at about 90. Made one hell of a mess, plus I had to pull the steaming remains off the towing-eye. Not pleasant!
